Vehicle Prototype Mechanic

Location: Palo Alto, CA 94304
Duration: 6-Month Contract (Extensions Possible)
Schedule: Flexible Hours (8:00 AM-5:00 PM or 10:00 AM-7:00 PM)
Pay Rate: 25/hr-35/hr
Overview
Ford is seeking a hands-on Vehicle Prototype Technician to support the development and testing of next-generation vehicles. This role is ideal for an experienced automotive technician who enjoys diagnosing issues, performing mechanical and electrical repairs, installing components, and working on vehicles that are not yet in production.
You'll work alongside engineers to build, modify, and troubleshoot prototype vehicles while supporting cutting-edge automotive technology.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as an Automotive Technician, Diesel Technician, Fleet Technician, or Automotive Mechanic
- Strong experience performing vehicle repairs, component replacement, and maintenance
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and service documentation
- Experience troubleshooting electrical and mechanical vehicle systems
- Comfortable using diagnostic tools, multimeters, hand tools, and shop equipment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to document completed work
Preferred Qualifications
- Automotive Technology Degree, ASE Certification, or equivalent technical training
- Experience with vehicle prototype builds, aftermarket installations, or custom vehicle modifications
- Experience working with electrical systems, wiring harnesses, CAN Bus, or vehicle networking systems
- High-voltage or EV experience
- Experience working in a manufacturing, R&D, or test vehicle environment
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and basic computer skills
Key Responsibilities
- Perform removal and replacement (R&R) of vehicle components including interiors, body panels, electrical systems, and mechanical assemblies
- Install prototype parts, electrical components, sensors, modules, and wiring harnesses
- Diagnose and troubleshoot vehicle issues including electrical, mechanical, and integration-related concerns
- Interpret wiring diagrams, connector pinouts, and technical work instructions
- Build, route, repair, and modify wiring harnesses as needed
- Conduct testing and validation using diagnostic equipment and multimeters
- Document repairs, modifications, and test findings
- Support vehicle preparation for road testing, proving grounds, and engineering evaluations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Work closely with engineering teams to support prototype vehicle development
