About the Role: Maxwell Plumb Mechanical Group is seeking a genuinely experienced Commercial HVAC and Boiler Service Technician who can independently diagnose, maintain, and repair complex HVAC and heating systems. This is a senior, hands-on service position for a technician with 10+ years of experience who can contribute immediately without constant supervision.

Most work is performed in multifamily buildings, high-rises, offices, retail properties, schools, and hospitals throughout New York City. This is not an apprentice, maintenance-only, or installation-only position.

What You’ll Do:

  • Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair commercial HVAC and boiler systems.
  • Work on Scotch Marine and firebox boilers, generally within the 100–600 size range.
  • Troubleshoot burners, pumps, motors, safeties, electrical components, control valves, and operating controls.
  • Service rooftop units, packaged units, split systems, mini-splits, and VRF systems.
  • Diagnose heating and boiler controls, including Heat-Timer systems.
  • Perform seasonal preventive maintenance and detailed equipment inspections.
  • Work with steam coils, control valves, and related heating components.
  • Read wiring diagrams and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control-related failures.
  • Identify the underlying cause of equipment failures and complete lasting repairs.
  • Communicate findings and repair recommendations to dispatch, management, customers, and building personnel.
  • Contact manufacturer technical support when necessary and follow problems through to resolution.
  • Complete accurate service documentation using company-provided technology.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, stocked, and professional company vehicle.
  • Participate in manufacturer-specific technical training and continuing education.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience: 10+ years of commercial HVAC and boiler service experience strongly preferred; five years of directly relevant experience is the absolute minimum.
  • Boiler Skills: Proven ability to independently diagnose and repair commercial boilers, burners, pumps, controls, safeties, steam coils, and control valves.
  • HVAC Skills: Strong experience troubleshooting rooftop units, packaged units, split systems, mini-splits, and VRF systems.
  • Certification: EPA Universal Certification required.
  • Safety Credentials: Applicable OSHA training and NYC FDNY Certificates of Fitness required.
  • Troubleshooting: Ability to read schematics and independently diagnose mechanical, electrical, refrigeration-cycle, and control-related failures.
  • Customer Service: Ability to communicate professionally with customers, residents, building personnel, dispatchers, and supervisors.
  • On-Call: Willingness to participate in the mandatory on-call rotation and work additional hours during peak seasons.
  • License: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Professionalism: Must be dependable, conscientious, team-oriented, receptive to feedback, and capable of working in occupied buildings.

Preferred (Not Required):

  • 10–20 years of commercial HVAC and boiler service experience.
  • Experience with Scotch Marine and firebox boilers.
  • Experience with Heat-Timer boiler controls.
  • Experience servicing multifamily buildings, high-rises, hospitals, schools, offices, and retail properties.
  • Mitsubishi or other VRF manufacturer training.
  • Gas-fitter license.
  • Current F-60, G-60, and other applicable NYC FDNY Certificates of Fitness.
