Phlebotomist

Job Overview Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Job Description In compliance with SOPs, perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring, and donor disconnect. In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, perform venipuncture on donors to begin the pheresis process. Evaluate vein performance to identify possible problems; make necessary corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Educate new donors on the use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma, explaining screening process, health screening tests, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, nutrition, and other pertinent information. Maintain alertness to any donor reactions and assist or notify appropriate staff. Use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the pheresis process. Perform calibrations and verify maintenance per SOPs, responding to and resolving complex equipment alarms or donor issues. Troubleshoot equipment failures and document incidents. Monitor donor flow to assure continuous turnover and alert supervisory staff of issues. Collect arm or whole blood samples for testing. Accurately record donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs. Understand policies associated with hyper‑immune programs at the center, if applicable. Maintain a clean, efficient work environment, ensuring supplies and forms are available; follow HSE and OSHA policies. Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor, and center information. May be cross‑trained in other areas to meet business needs. Bilingual skills may be required, at discretion of the organization. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience Internal CSL employees: must have completed CSL Plasma DST training. External candidates: minimum six months as a phlebotomist (one year preferred). Minimum twelve (12) months of experience in a medical or health care environment. Preferred Qualifications Combination of education and experience equivalent to the stated requirements. Working Conditions Ability to complete routine forms and conduct oral communications. Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions. Must be able to see and speak with customers and observe equipment operation. Occasionally perform tasks while standing and walking 100% of the time. Reach, bend, kneel and have high manual dexterity. Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions. Frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures, and blood‑borne pathogens. Required to wear personal protective equipment during specific tasks. Required to work overtime and extended hours to support center operational needs.
