Managing Director Park Square Theatre Reports To Board of Directors with direct line of responsibility to the President of the Board Supervises Administrative Staff (Finance, Marketing, Development, Operations) Status Full-Time, Exempt Position Summary The Managing Director (MD) provides executive leadership for the administrative, financial, and operational functions of Park Square Theatre during a pivotal 2025–2029 strategic growth period. In a co‑leadership model with the Artistic Director, the MD ensures the organization’s artistic vision is supported by robust fiscal management, aggressive revenue development, and sustainable infrastructure. The MD is a key driver in transforming the theatre into a premier artistic hub in downtown St. Paul, focusing on multi‑generational engagement and long‑term institutional stability. Key Responsibilities Organizational Leadership & Governance Co-Leadership: Partner with the Artistic Director to implement the 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, balancing "The Stories You Want, The Artists You Love" with operational viability. Board Relations: Serve as the primary administrative liaison to the Board of Directors. In accordance with the Bylaws, provide direct support to the Board President and ensure all Board committees are appropriately staffed and resourced. Culture: Foster an inclusive, high‑performing workplace culture that supports a multi‑generational staff and reflects the Theatre’s commitment to engaging with people of all types of backgrounds and viewpoints. Financial Management & Sustainability Fiscal Oversight: Develop and manage a $2M+ annual budget. Lead the organization toward the strategic goal of a 49% earned / 51% unearned income split by 2029. Debt & Reserve Management: Oversee the management of organizational debt and execute the Board‑directed plan to establish and maintain emergency reserve funds. Reporting: Ensure rigorous financial compliance with Minnesota nonprofit regulations, overseeing audits, cash flow forecasting, and quarterly Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting to the Board. Fundraising & Resource Development Strategic Growth: In partnership with the Director of Development, lead a comprehensive fundraising strategy to increase contributed revenue from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Capital Campaigns: Spearhead capital fundraising efforts specifically targeted at the 2026–2028 facility improvement plan, including HVAC, lighting, and ADA‑accessibility upgrades. Donor Stewardship: Maintain and grow a portfolio of major donors, ensuring the Theatre’s mission resonates with long‑term philanthropic partners. Operations, Infrastructure & Facilities Facility Modernization: Oversee the management of the Theatre’s physical assets, prioritizing the 2026–2028 capital projects to improve patron safety, accessibility, and comfort. Systems & Contracts: Ensure efficient administrative systems (IT, HR, CRM) and oversee all legal contracts, including union agreements, vendor leases, and insurance renewals. Downtown Advocacy: Act as a representative for the Theatre in downtown St. Paul initiatives, collaborating with local businesses and city officials to improve parking solutions and public safety for patrons. Education & Youth Programming Pyramid Oversight: Provide administrative and strategic oversight for the Theatre’s Education Pillar. Support the implementation of the five‑level "Pyramid" model: Open Doors, Stage Doors, Park Square Youth Theatre Company, Mentorship, and Hire. Staffing: Lead the future recruitment and integration of an Education Director to scale youth programming as a primary driver of the Theatre's mission. Marketing & Audience Development Revenue Generation: Supervise marketing and communications strategies designed to increase ticket sales and subscription renewals, utilizing data‑driven insights to reach new, diverse audiences. Brand Stewardship: Ensure the Theatre’s brand is positioned as a "must‑see" destination for contemporary American plays and reimagined classics. Human Resources Team Development: Hire, supervise, and evaluate administrative staff. In collaboration with the Board HR Committee, develop equitable employment practices and professional development tracks. Qualifications Experience: 7–10+ years of senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or performing arts organization. Proven track record in change management and organizational scaling. Financial Acumen: Advanced experience in nonprofit accounting, debt management, and complex budgeting. Education: Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or Master’s in Arts Administration preferred. Development Skills: Demonstrated success in leading capital campaigns and high‑level donor cultivation. Governance: Familiarity with nonprofit governance and compliance under Minnesota law. Passion: A deep commitment to the role of theatre in building community empathy and inclusion. Core Competencies Strategic Thinking: Ability to translate a five‑year vision into actionable quarterly goals. Collaborative Leadership: Excellence in the co‑leadership model, working seamlessly with artistic partners and a volunteer Board. Crisis & Change Management: Resilience and adaptability in navigating the evolving arts landscape and facility transitions. Public Presence: Strong communication skills for advocating the Theatre’s mission to donors, city leaders, and the public.
