TPWD - Natural Resources Specialist IV (Regional Natural Resources Coordinator)

Position Title Natural Resources Specialist IV (Regional Natural Resources Coordinator) Organization PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT Primary Location Texas – Bastrop (SP-RO-R3-Bastrop 1174 Hwy 71 East Bastrop 78602) Job Summary Responsible for planning and implementing natural resource stewardship activities within Central Texas State Parks and Natural Areas. Reports to the Natural Resources Program Director, supervises one natural resources specialist, and collaborates with regional, division, agency and inter‑agency project teams to protect, restore and manage natural resources on State Parks. Responsibilities Oversee the development and execution of long‑term planning and stewardship documents; direct projects for protection, restoration, monitoring and research; conduct reviews of infrastructure and development proposals affecting State Park lands; ensure compliance with Texas Parks and Wildlife code, federal and state environmental laws and other regulations; prepare recommendations to mitigate impacts on wildlife, park aesthetics and visitor use; participate in prescribed fire planning and execution; provide training, technical assistance and staff support; work independently with latitude for judgment and initiative; perform additional duties as assigned; comply with Agency rules, regulations and procedures. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Conservation Science, Biological Science, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Experience: Six years of field experience in natural resources management or conservation science; experience in community‑based stewardship; experience with GIS/GPS tools and applications. Licensure: Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license; non‑commercial pesticide/herbicide applicator license; National Wildfire Coordinator’s Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II certification. Physical: Ability to pass the moderate‑duty physical fitness test (walk 2 miles with a 25‑lb pack in 30 minutes or less) within one year of employment. Acceptable Substitutions Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one year of required experience. Ph.D. in a related field may substitute for two years of required experience. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related field. Experience: Five years developing resource management objectives and prescribing land management tools (prescribed fire, habitat restoration, etc.); three years of GIS field mapping experience; interdisciplinary background including cultural resource stewardship; experience implementing and managing projects; experience building public and private partnerships. Licensure: Current NWCG Fire Fighter Type II certification; current non‑commercial pesticide applicator license. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of community‑based management, research techniques, federal, state, local regulations, wildland fire behavior, fire ecology; proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, GPS and GIS software; effective communication, reporting, public speaking, project management, independent decision‑making, budget administration, training facilitation. Working Conditions Work on overtime, holidays and weekends. Work outdoors in adverse weather and near insects, animals and poisonous plants. Manual labor including lifting up to 50 lbs. Travel up to 25% of time, possibly including overnight stays.
