Role Summary


The Clinical Trainer leads onboarding and clinical training for all new ophthalmic technicians while serving as the primary clinical mentor and resource for new hires throughout their first year of employment. This role provides ongoing coaching, competency validation, gap training, and advanced skills development to ensure consistent clinical excellence across the practice. Personnel matters remain the responsibility of the employee's direct supervisor, while clinical skills, competency, and professional development are supported by the Clinical Education Coordinator. Reports to the Director of Clinical Operations.


This role will involve about 50% training duties and 50% in-clinic tech duties but training responsibilities will expand as the practice grows.


Training Duties

• Coordinate and deliver onboarding for all new clinical hires.

• Serve as the primary clinical mentor and resource for new technicians throughout their first year of employment.

• Develop, implement, and maintain standardized clinical education, competency validation, and continuing education programs.

• Assess clinical performance, identify skill gaps, and provide coaching, remediation, and advanced training.

• Develop and maintain clinical training materials, competency records, and education documentation.

• Create and manage the clinical staffing schedule, including daily technician assignments and staffing adjustments.

• Collaborate with physicians and clinical leadership to standardize clinical workflows and support implementation of new equipment, technology, and clinical processes.

• Communicate technician performance and training progress to leadership, escalating personnel, attendance, and behavioral concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

• Support clinical operations through direct patient care and other administrative or operational responsibilities as assigned.

Technician Duties

• Assist doctors during examinations and procedures by preparing the necessary instruments and equipment.

• Perform preliminary tests, including measuring visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and pupil reactions. Includes visual fields, OCT, IOM, biometry, pachymetry, refraction, and more.

• Record patient medical histories and vital signs accurately.

• Educate patients on eye health, treatment options, and post-operative care.

• Handle phone calls, patient triage, and administrative tasks to assist the provider.

• Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

• Collaborate with team members to enhance patient experience and streamline clinic operations.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of ophthalmic technician experience.

• Strong clinical knowledge and communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, and mentor others.

• COA, COT, or COMT certification preferred. Candidates without certification may be considered if they demonstrate exceptional clinical skills and agree to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

Job Details


Full time hours (35-40 hours per week)


Work Location: In person


Approximate work days/hours: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm
