Job Description

The Assembly Technician prepares laminated composite parts for shipment by grinding and sanding them to a precise finish and installing subassemblies such as washers, bolts, and brackets that allow these components to integrate into larger systems like racecars and drones. This role focuses on meticulous, hands-on work at a standing bench, using small hand and power tools to achieve high-quality results and to document the progress of each part through the production process. The position operates in a specialized, low-volume, custom job shop environment where a single part can take up to eight hours to complete, requiring patience, consistency, and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Grind and sand laminated composite parts using electronic grinders and sanders to achieve the required smoothness and finish.
• Install and secure subassemblies such as washers, bolts, brackets, and other hardware onto parts to prepare them for integration into larger assemblies.
• Work at a standing bench using hands, hand tools, and power tools to complete detailed finishing tasks on each part.
• Ensure that all parts meet strict quality standards through careful inspection and attention to detail throughout the process.
• Maintain accurate work records and documentation as parts move through each stage of production.
• Follow established, repeatable processes while remaining patient and adaptable as training materials and work instructions evolve.
• Manage time effectively to keep products moving through the process and to meet production and shipment timelines.
• Apply mechanical aptitude to tasks such as assembly, grinding, and basic machine operation, drawing on both professional and personal experience.
• Read and understand blueprints, schematics, and written work instructions once trained, and apply them correctly to daily work.
• Use required personal protective equipment, including dust masks in the grinding area, and adhere to all safety procedures when working with composite materials.
• Collaborate with team members in a custom job shop environment, sharing knowledge and supporting continuous improvement of processes.
• Assist with packaging and preparation of finished composite parts for shipment when needed.

Essential Skills

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow a precise, repeatable process.
• Ability to stand for an entire 8-hour shift while working at a bench.
• Comfort and proficiency using hand tools and power tools for grinding, sanding, and assembly tasks.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, such as experience with assembly, grinding, machine operation, or similar hands-on activities in work or personal projects.
• Ability to work with great care and precision to meet established quality standards.
• Patience with training and willingness to learn in an environment where training manuals and work instructions are still being developed.
• Good time management skills to keep products moving efficiently through the process.
• Capability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and written work instructions once training is complete.
• Reliability in following safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment in the grinding area.

Available Shift & Pay

• 1st shift: 8am-5pm
• $18-22 based on experience

Work Environment

This role follows a daytime schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a one-hour lunch break. There are no fixed break times; employees take one or two short breaks at natural stopping points in their work. Overtime is not mandated but is often available for trained employees who want additional hours. The facility is temperature-controlled, bright, and has relatively little heavy machinery, creating a comfortable environment similar to working in a well-organized garage. Assembly Technicians work primarily at standing benches in a specialized grinding and finishing area. The grinding area can be loud, and dust masks are required when working with carbon fiber and other composite materials. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas, and employees may wear shorts; most team members choose company-branded shirts. The workplace features a themed kitchen and break area styled like a 1950s diner, along with grills and outdoor seating that provide a relaxed space for meals and breaks, reinforcing a casual, friendly atmosphere.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.
