Principal Position Job Details Job ID: 5702381 Application Deadline: May 22, 2026 11:59 PM (UTC) Posted: May 08, 2026 12:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Job Description Job Goal To perform as the chief administrator and instructional leader of the school under the supervision of the Superintendent and in accordance with the policies of the South Hadley School Committee, state law, and applicable regulations. To supervise the direction of the students, programs, and personnel of the school. To manage the operation of the building, grounds, and equipment. To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student. Performance Responsibilities Instructional Leadership Ensures that all teachers design effective and rigorous standards‑based units of instruction consisting of well‑structured lessons with measurable outcomes. Ensures that instructional practices in all settings reflect high expectations regarding content and quality of effort and work, engage all students, and are personalized to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs, interests, and levels of readiness. Ensures that all teachers use a variety of formal and informal methods and assessments to measure student learning, growth, and understanding and make necessary adjustments to their practice when students are not learning. Provides effective and timely supervision and evaluation of staff in alignment with state regulations and contract provisions, Ensures educators pursue meaningful, actionable, and measurable professional practice and student learning goals. Makes frequent unannounced visits to classrooms and gives targeted and constructive feedback to teachers. Exercises sound judgment in assigning ratings for performance and impact on student learning. Reviews alignment between judgment about practice and data about student learning, growth, or achievement when evaluating and rating educators and understands that the supervisor has the responsibility to confirm the rating in cases in which a discrepancy exists. Uses multiple sources of evidence related to student learning, including state, district, and school assessment results and growth data, to inform school and district goals and improve organizational performance, educator effectiveness, and student learning. Promotes innovative practice and encourages a growth mindset among staff and students that supports genuine life‑long learning. Management and Operations Develops and executes effective plans, procedures, routines, and operational systems to address a full range of safety, health, emotional and social needs of students. Implements a cohesive approach to recruitment, hiring, induction, development, and career growth that promotes high‑quality and effective practice. Uses systems to ensure optimal use of time for teaching, learning, and collaboration. Understands and complies with state and federal laws and mandates, school committee policies, collective bargaining agreements, and ethical guidelines. Develops a budget that supports the district's vision, mission, and goals; allocates and manages expenditures consistent with district/school‑level goals and available resources. Family and Community Engagement Actively ensures that all families are welcome members of the classroom and school community and can contribute to the classroom, school, and community's effectiveness. Collaborates with families to support student learning and development both at home and at school. Engages in regular, two‑way, culturally proficient communication with families about student learning and performance. Addresses parent/guardian concerns equitably, efficiently and with sensitivity. Develops and nurtures a culture in which staff members are reflective about their practice and use student data, current research, best practices and theory to continuously adapt instruction and achieve improved results. Models these behaviors in the administrator's own practice. Continuously engages all stakeholders in the creation of a shared educational vision in which every student is prepared to be successful and persistent learners and become responsible citizens and community contributors. Employs strategies for responding to disagreement and dissent constructively resolving conflict and building consensus throughout a district/school community. Position Type Position Type: Full‑time Salary Salary: $100,000 to $115,000 Per Year Job Categories Administration > Principal/Dean/Head of School Job Requirements Experience and Training: Minimum of Masters degree in Educational Administration or related field. Certification/eligibility for certification as Massachusetts School Principal for grade levels appropriate to school enrollment. Minimum of three years successful experience as principal or at least five years progressively responsible experience as an assistant principal. Additional experience as teacher at the appropriate grade level preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of current school organization, curriculum, and student services, including current research and best practices, pedagogy, differential instruction, SEL and innovative approaches for school improvement, including familiarity with Massachusetts Curriculum frameworks. Broad experience and understanding of all facets of school administration: instructional leadership, student services, supervision and evaluation of personnel, school/community relations, finance, budget development, and facility management. Demonstrate knowledge of educational technology. Evidence of visionary leadership, initiative, analytical skills and problem solving abilities. Strong organization and management skills. Evident human relations and communication skills, including proven ability to work cooperatively as a team member with staff, parents, community members, and colleagues on behalf of students. Commitment to and advocacy for the education of all students as the primary mission of the public schools. Terms of Employment: As agreed upon through individual negotiated contract Evaluation: Performance of the job will be evaluated on a yearly basis by the Superintendent of Schools or designee consistent with the requirements and expectations of Massachusetts Educator Evaluation, 603 CMR 35.00, and locally developed procedures. Environmental Conditions: The occupant is required to work indoors. The regular chemical solvents are toners and cleaning fluids. At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
