Civil, Juvenile, and Foreclosure for Calvert Court Circuit Court. Processes and maintains civil cases by reviewing pleadings received through Odyssey File and Serve or paper pleadings and establishing case file records in MDEC. Assisting customers at the counter, phone or in the courtroom by handling filings and issues in a timely and accurate manner. Process new or reopen existing cases, receive pleadings or petitions, issue writs, summons, warrants, and review papers, pleadings, and orders. Prepare and process Appeals. Assists the public attorneys, and judges by providing information about the status of cases or about Clerk’s office procedures both at the counter and by telephone. Provide all billing discrepancies to attention of supervisor. Receives, enters, and accounts for all monies received by the court for fines, court costs and other fees, utilizing cash register. Serve as the Courtroom Clerk for Juvenile Delinquent proceedings and CINA proceedings. Understanding the terminology as it relates to the juvenile cases. Prepare the assigned courtroom for the day’s scheduled trials. Performs all other duties as assigned. The position may require occasional overtime. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Initiates and processes new foreclosure, civil, and juvenile cases by indexing, assigning case numbers, issuing summons, and establishing case record. Maintain foreclosure, civil and juvenile case records by operating/reviewing/accepting documents, docketing, processing orders, entering dispositions, and closing cases. Issues various writs summonses, body attachments, etc. as ordered Prepare docket sheets and records for court. Performs Courtroom Clerk duties in Juvenile Delinquent and CINA proceedings. Communicates with the public and other offices and agencies regarding cases, by telephone, in writing, and in person. Research, reviews, and analyzes changes in the MD Rules of Procedures, MD Codes, court policies, and the decisions which affect the office. Receives, enters, and accounts for all monies received by the court for fines, court costs and other fees, utilizing cash register. Assessing court costs and request financial group be assessed by the supervisor for preparation to attorneys and/or parties of a case. Minimum Qualifications Education: High school diploma (or GED equivalent). Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services. A Bachelor’s Degree may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience. A Paralegal Certificate May Substitute The Required Work Experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge Of General office practices, procedures, and equipment. Standard legal forms and documents used in the Judiciary. Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Skill In Customer service and handling problems tactfully and patiently. Typing on a personal computer. Accuracy and attention to detail. Ability To Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copier, microfilm machine, register, scanner, fax machine, etc. Use and maintain alphabetical and numerical filing systems. Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing. Understand and abide by departmental rules, regulations, and procedures. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys. Apply various court procedures accurately and effectively for assigned courtroom in accordance with courtroom protocols. Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment. Use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying appropriate policy, procedure, rule, law, and/or regulation to a situation. Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast‑paced environment. Pay attention to detail. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, and/or the public. Utilize cash register and follow protocol on handling checks and cashiering process. Physical Requirements Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work. Equipment, Machinery And Tools Computer Terminal/PC and printer ? Data entry, access files, access information, print paperwork for court, etc. Telephone ? Answer questions, obtain information for court. Copier ? Make copies for court files. Typewriter ? Type and prepare manual with upkeep of the current law. Fax Machine, Mail Machine, Courtsmart Recording System, etc. Software And Computer Skills Use of MDEC program for docketing and maintaining of civil, foreclosure and juvenile cases. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Edge, PaperVision, keyboarding, basic understanding of personal computers and their operation and components.Odyssey File and Serve.
