RN - ICU

Registered Nurse (RN)

This role is for a mixed acuity unit that includes intermediate care patients as well as non-vented ICU level patients.

• Unit: 4 South (PCU)
• Beds: 18
• Minimum Years of Experience Required: 1 year of ICU experience
• First-Time Travelers: Accepted with 2 years of ICU experience

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

• Neurological and post-procedural patients:
• Post TNK
• Neuro IR procedures (Embolizations, angiography)
• Hemorrhages / aneurysms
• Burr holes
• Post VP shunt placements
• Post craniotomy / craniectomy
• Lumbar drains
• Spinal cord injuries
• Non-vented neuro patients including EVDs, continuous EEG, and neuro/spine surgery
• Other Conditions:
• Respiratory Failure
• CHF
• Hypotension
• Sepsis
• Acute Neurological Diagnosis
• DKA
• Electrolyte abnormalities

Patient Ratios

• RN: 1:3 based on acuity
• CNA: 1:12

Required Licenses and Certifications

• ACLS
• BLS
• NIHSS

Skills Required

• Experience managing patients on BiPAP/CPAP
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation
• CVP monitoring
• Monitoring hemodynamic lines
• Post-surgical drains
• Trachs and chest tubes
• Experience with titratable drips, including, but not limited to:
• Cardizem
• Dobutamine
• Dopamine
• Esmolol
• Insulin
• Cardene
• Nitro
• Levophed
• Ephedrine

Support Within the Department

• CNA Duties: Assisting with patient baths, meals, linen changes, blood sugar checks, temperature checks, patient toileting, and hourly rounding
• Receptionist/HUC Duties: Managing call lights, answering phones, and assisting in patient transportation
• Charge Nurse: Yes
• Phlebotomy: Yes
• IV/VAT Team: Yes
• Rapid Response Team: Yes
• Resource Nurse: Dedicated educator & nurse mentor
• RT Services: Available 24/7
• Hospitalist Services: Available 24/7
• Intensivist Services: Available 24/7
• Telemetry Monitoring: RNs required to read and measure telemetry strips

• Monitors: Spacelabs and Respira
• Unit-Specific Equipment: Bedside monitors, bladder scanner

Orientation

• New Travelers: 24 hours of classroom training followed by 24 hours on the unit
