Assistant Vice President of K-12 Academics and Innovation (East/Southeast Michigan)

Salary & Benefits Minimum starting salary: $125,000.00; commensurate with experience. Primary Duties Lead a team of professionals to ensure training, support, and resources are effectively deployed to facilitate academic and organizational excellence in charter schools. Provide governance support at each charter board meeting and develop an effective board training program to increase each board member’s capacity to govern. Oversee the annual assessment of each school’s capacity to deliver superior academic, fiscal, and organizational performance, and report findings to university stakeholders, school boards of directors, and the public in a fair, accurate, and timely manner. Participate in the review of applications for new charter schools and evaluate the performance of existing charter schools at the end of their contracts. Manage strategic relationships with potential charter applicants, nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, and other partner organizations, especially in East and Southeast Michigan. Liaise with schools, boards, and potential partners to encourage and support the development of quality programming. Foster and serve as a catalyst for education innovation. Liaise with officials from the Michigan Department of Education, other governmental entities, and authorizing bodies. Represent the Division in a variety of settings. Perform other duties as required or assigned by leadership. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Master’s degree in a relevant field of study. Five (5+) years of experience building and leading diverse teams of people, including contractors and vendors, to increase quality and equity in public schools. Three (3+) years of experience leading large-scale education program evaluation and subsequent strategic planning; developing, implementing, and overseeing school accountability systems to rapidly increase educational program quality in charter school operations and/or oversight. Experience partnering with individuals and organizations in East and Southeast Michigan to improve public education, including other authorizers, state associations, state education agencies, nonprofits, and foundations. Strong written, oral, interpersonal, analytical, and technology skills, including proficiency with office productivity software, virtual meeting platforms, and digital file management systems. Demonstrated sense of personal responsibility, integrity, and accountability. Ability to work as part of a collegial team of professionals that solves problems together, supports each other, and advances together. Commitment to creating more equitable access to high-quality educational choices, especially for students in historically underserved communities. Demonstrated political acumen and ability to navigate complex organizational stakeholder environments. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Seven or more (7+) years of experience building and leading diverse teams of people, including contractors and vendors, to increase quality and equity in public schools. Five or more (5+) years of experience leading, supervising, and coaching teams to success. Experience in leading large-scale education program evaluation and subsequent strategic planning; developing, implementing, and overseeing school accountability systems to rapidly increase educational program quality in charter school operations and/or oversight. Experience partnering with individuals and organizations in East and Southeast Michigan to improve public education, including authorizers, state associations, state education agencies, nonprofits, and foundations. A Ph.D. in a relevant field of study. Established relationships with major nonprofit, philanthropic, and other relevant organizations in East and Southeast Michigan. Experience working in or with a higher education institution, particularly a college of education, to advance innovations in education. Knowledge of specialty K‑12 programs such as preschool, college and technical education, Montessori, and how they contribute to the educational landscape to meet student needs.
