Job Overview The Public Health Department of Alameda County Health provides oversight and supervision of a large public health laboratory. The supervisor manages laboratory operations, reviews work of microbiologists and technicians, ensures quality assurance, coordinates training, and serves as acting director in the Director’s absence. Responsibilities Supervise the operation of a large public health laboratory. Review the work of microbiologists and laboratory technicians. Assist with planning, development, and evaluation of laboratory procedures. Coordinate and oversee the laboratory training program. Assist the Director and act in their absence. Perform related work as required. Ideal Candidate Demonstrated success in supervising and mentoring scientific staff. Strong teamwork and accountability within a laboratory environment. Ability to build relationships with laboratory personnel, healthcare providers, and public health officials. Expertise in public health laboratory procedures (bacteriology, virology, serology, etc.) and interpretation of complex diagnostic testing. Experience leading quality assurance and control efforts, including regulatory compliance and continuous improvement initiatives. Strong analytical skills for interpreting statistical and narrative data and preparing technical reports. Capability to plan and manage laboratory operations, including scheduling, inventory, and equipment maintenance. Proficiency in developing and delivering technical training programs. Apply innovative problem‑solving to resolve complex laboratory challenges. Minimum Qualifications Pattern I: Equivalent to one year of experience as a Senior Microbiologist in the County of Alameda classified service. Pattern II: Equivalent to two years of experience as a Microbiologist in the County classified service. Pattern III: Bachelor’s degree in a medical or public health laboratory or microbiology field plus equivalent to three years of experience as a microbiologist in a public health laboratory. A master’s degree may substitute one year, a doctoral degree may substitute two years. Possession of a valid California Public Health Microbiologist certificate. Knowledge and Skills Principles of effective administration and personnel management. Knowledge of public health laboratory procedures across multiple disciplines (bacteriology, parasitology, serology, hematology, mycology, virology, sanitary bacteriology). Methods of narrative and statistical reporting. Laboratory personnel supervision and training. Technical problem‑solving and instructional skills. Record‑keeping, report preparation, and communication skills. Professional relationship building and independent judgment within established policies. Examination Components The examination consists of three steps: (1) Review of applicants’ minimum qualifications; (2) Review of supplemental questionnaires to determine best qualified candidates; and (3) Oral interview weighted as 100% of the final score.
