What this job is about: The Assistant Director of Research and Data Visualization serves on the Education and Research Team (ERT), which addresses issues related to internal medicine education (undergraduate medical education [UME] and graduate medical education [GME]). The team also oversees research on the discipline and profession of academic medicine through survey data collection, descriptive and exploratory analyses for data visualizations and summary reports, and comparative analyses for publication by member advisory committees/work groups. The Assistant Director of Research and Data Visualization integrates intermediate research skills with data visualization and analytical capabilities. This position is responsible for developing and implementing frameworks (e.g., project milestones and timelines) for research studies, analyzing datasets of variable sizes and complexity, and translating findings into clear, compelling visual insights, reports, and other communications to inform stakeholders on timely issues in their profession. This role serves as a critical bridge between Alliance survey data collection and stakeholder priorities by ensuring that results from studies of complex issues are analytically rigorous and can be interpreted by diverse audiences. The Assistant Director of Research and Data Visualization also applies independent judgment by reviewing requests for Surveys staff support and advising the Director of Survey Research on how to proceed. Responsibilities: Designs, plans, and manages the frameworks (e.g., project milestones and timelines for deliverables) for survey research studies and other data analysis projects from inception to completion. Develops and oversees study protocols while ensuring compliance with research ethics and data confidentiality. Coordinates the activities of cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and member advisory committees/work groups to execute research initiatives. Leads survey development processes, including pilot testing, fielding, data collection, and analyses for summary reporting, ensuring methodological rigor throughout the research lifecycle. Serves as a primary point of contact for project stakeholders and provides periodic updates to Alliance staff and leadership. Manages quantitative datasets of varying sizes, structures, and degrees of complexity, cleaning and validity-checking results to ensure data accuracy and integrity. Conducts descriptive, exploratory, and comparative statistical analyses using data analysis software. Identifies trends, patterns, and key metrics or indicators to generate actionable insights internally and externally. Prepares datasets as sources for Alliance member interactive data dashboard queries, reports, and visualizations, curating which content to include and updating it when appropriate. Translates analytical findings of varying degrees of complexity into intuitive visuals and narratives for technical and non-technical audiences. Similarly, applies best practices in data storytelling and visual design to communicate insights effectively. Continually evaluates and implements emerging visualization tools and techniques. Contributes to the development of scholarly manuscripts and presentations with member-driven survey or survey question author groups. Similarly, contributes to policy briefs or organizational reporting efforts. Presents findings from data collection to stakeholders, leadership teams, and external audiences. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including other researchers and executive leadership. Facilitates member survey advisory committee meetings, developing draft agendas and ensuring follow-through on action items. Attends offsite in-person and other virtual meetings to fulfill the responsibilities of this position. Mentors junior research staff and provide technical guidance as appropriate. Maintains certification in human subjects research training, applies this knowledge to ensure AAIM survey data integrity, confidentiality, and survey participants’ rights. Develops and oversees the responsible and effective fiscal management, allocation, and reporting of the department’s budget, which may cover staff, vendors, tools and equipment, resources, travel, programs, meetings, committees, revenue, expenses, and invoice coding. Reports potential budgetary problems and collaborates on creating solutions. Oversees multiple projects simultaneously; guides the development of project plans; substantiates the staff, vendors, skills, and financial resources required to complete tasks. Manages direct reports by setting performance goals, monitoring performance, and maintaining an ongoing dialogue regarding successes and challenges using developmental coaching and mentoring. Makes staff compensation, transfer, promotion, and termination decisions. Advises and guides managers and supervisors on providing appropriate and timely employment decisions and rewards to their staff which help to motivate and retain the best talent. Develops and executes recruitment and selection plans to identify and hire talent with strong qualifications and competencies. Provides new hires with a solid foundation for success by orientating and training them on AAIM, their department, and their roles and responsibilities. Perform other duties as necessary. Supervisory Responsibility and Key Relationships: Position includes significant representative contact with committees and members through email, telephone, and onsite meetings for purposes of strategic planning, policy, and oversight. Once renovations are complete, shared group space will be available for team meetings. Staff will primarily work remotely, with quarterly in-person staff events and occasional team meetings held in the office at team leaders’ discretion. AAIM will consider remote employees who live outside the DC metro area on a case-by-case basis. Requirements: Master’s degree + 8 years’ experience in Data Science, Statistics, Survey Methodology, other related Social Sciences (Psychology, Applied Sociology, Economics), or a related field (e.g., Public Policy), including experience in research design, data analysis, and/or data visualization. Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects or applied research studies. Intermediate competency in commonly-used statistical software packages and professional survey software suite (Stata and Qualtrics XM [or Alchemer] preferred or willingness to learn if trained in comparable suites such as SPSS and QuestionPro, SurveyMonkey, or RedCap). Intermediate-level knowledge of descriptive and basic inferential statistics, including predictive modeling and best practices for reporting results for public consumption. Proficiency in data visualization tools ([preferably Power BI], Tableau, Looker). Data storytelling and visual communication capabilities. Intermediate-level knowledge of survey question design and validity checking through practices such as confirmatory factor analysis and cognitive interviewing. Ability to maintain annual renewal of human subjects research training certificate and remain current with best practices for research ethics, including institutional review board study protocol management. Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite applications and web-based collaborative tools; quick study in learning new software suites and applications. Highly skilled at communicating verbally and in writing, providing original content and using accurate grammar, tact, and diplomacy. Highly developed problem solving, analytical, and strategic thinking skills. Superior organizational and time management skills, and attention to quality. Highly skilled at working with general direction managing multiple priorities simultaneously. Highly skilled at working independently and collaboratively as a team member and exhibiting sensitivity and professionalism when dealing with a wide array of internal and external customers. Ability to analyze and provide suggestions for new and revised policies and guidelines, and lead by example by following established policies and guidelines. Highly skilled at working with board, council, and committee leaders to manage members and justify committee terms. Beneficial Skills and Experience: Undergraduate or graduate studies in applied social science research techniques (including hypothesis testing), broad familiarity with academic medicine or disciplinary research in a professional association or similar setting, and essential project management skills. Technical writing skills for reporting results from survey and survey-like datasets and strong communication skills for conveying results to diverse audiences through effective visualizations. Elementary/working knowledge of programming languages (Python, R, JavaScript) or familiarity with web technologies and visualization libraries (e.g., D3.js, HTML/CSS) Experience as project staff in human subjects research studies requiring institutional review board review of study protocols.
