Job Title Deputy Sheriff Job Description The Columbus Consolidated Government is looking for a Deputy Sheriff to join their team. The role involves maintaining jail security, performing inmate head counts, monitoring inmate activities, booking and prisoner intake activities, transporting inmates, administering alcohol tests, and testifying in court. The Deputy Sheriff will also obtain warrants, make arrests, transport prisoners to and from court, patrol the county to deter and detect criminal activities, deliver civil papers, attend training classes, and appear in court to testify on behalf of the state. Additional duties include performing the duties of K-9 Officer and Bomb Technician, and working as a Training Officer. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The ideal candidate will have knowledge of federal, state, and local laws governing arrests, search and seizure, affidavits and warrants, and all aspects of law enforcement. They should also have knowledge of court procedures and civil processes, criminal arrest warrant procedures, and GCIC and NCIC rules and regulations. Skills in interviewing witnesses, establishing effective working relationships, planning, organizing, problem solving, and decision making are essential. Proficiency in the use of firearms, office equipment, and communication skills are also required. Minimum Educational and Training Requirements The position requires knowledge and competency associated with specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Candidates must meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act. A valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated is also necessary. Physical Requirements The work involves intermittent sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Required physical abilities include feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is typically performed in an office and at crime scenes.
