Salamatof Forestry & Fire (SF&F) Laborer Position

The Salamatof Forestry & Fire (SF&F) Laborer position is based in Kenai, AK. The Laborer will be responsible for a variety of tasks to keep our operations running smoothly. These tasks may include but are not limited to: manual labor, maintenance and repair work and general upkeep. Laborer is responsible for performing designated tasks to aid daily operations at a SF&F site. Pay starts at $18.00/hour depending on experience.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of applicable field experience is required
  • Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record
  • Strong focus and attention to detail for maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions, standard practices, processes and materials involved in each trade relating to general labor and maintenance and to grounds and potentially equipment maintenance. Including skills in cultivation and maintenance of trees, lawns and ornamental shrubs and use of the equipment to perform such work.
  • Skills in: Use and care of tools and equipment employed in each trade relating to general building construction and maintenance and to grounds and equipment maintenance.
  • Abilities: Work harmoniously with other maintenance employees, the general public and SFF/management staff. Perform moderately heavy manual labor, in or out-of-doors, including lifting heavy objects, with strength and agility and to work under adverse weather conditions, if necessary, such as heat, cold and around mechanical equipment, chemicals, tools and with soil. Operate motor vehicles including a pickup truck and small dump truck. Follow oral and written instructions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend morning safety meeting
  • Loading and unloading tools or raw materials, working with hand tools (shovels, pickaxe, etc.) rigging, lifting and packing, operate ATV and trailers plus ATV log skidder, operate vehicles, maintain vehicles and small equipment, fuel equipment, Mobilize & demobilize, fire wising the related areas, maintaining a clean, safe and efficient WFP site while also supporting the overall project.
  • Perform maintenance of various grounds by cleaning up debris, removing slash, digging shallow trenches or areas as required, seeding, watering, mowing and general cultivating of lawns, shapes and controls trees and shrubs via pruning, raking grass and leaves.
  • Clears snow and ice from building and grounds by shoveling, operating a snow blower as needed and any other equipment required safely.
  • Perform moderately heavy manual labor, in or out-doors, including lifting heavy objects with strength and agility to work under adverse weather conditions, if necessary, such as heat, cold and around mechanical equipment, chemicals, tools, or soil.
  • Inspect work areas for hazards and communicate potential dangers to supervisors
  • Work long hours in all weather conditions
  • Other jobs as directed

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; most of time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about. Must be able to lift 50 lbs or more.
