Permit Technician

Job TitleUnder the direction of the Lead Permit Technician. Serves as first point of contact for walk-in and phone customers of the Building Department. Answers general questions for processes and services provided by the Building Department.Essential Functions of WorkServes as first point of contact for walk-in and phone costumers of the building departmentAnswers general questions for processes and services provided by Building Department to include permit applications for commercial, residential, miscellaneous signs, temporary use, and projects in the City of ReynoldsburgReviews for completeness, records receipts and forwards to appropriate division for reviewProvides fee information and project numbers for fee collectionsReviews, reads and understands construction plans to ensure all city ordinances are followed: processes all permits after the completion of plan review; may process over the counter permits. Coordinates permit process with outside agencies to ensure all permit requirements are metServes as file manager for electrical plumbing irrigators and mechanical trade licenses, insurance and bondsMaintains files for all permit certificates of occupancy, vendor, health inspections and other documents issued or approved the building departmentPerforms records research to document project history compliance: prepares records retention & disposal schedulesInputs data into city computer software for monthly/yearly report preparation for reviewPerforms other administrative tasks: receives, opens, sorts & distributes mail to appropriate people, answers telephone & screens callsRemains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to dutiesParticipates in staff development activities and attends staff meetingsMeets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functionsDemonstrates regular and predictable attendancePerforms other related duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsEducationHigh school diploma or GED or equivalentTwo (2) years experience or training in administrative work preferably in a building department or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform office practices and procedures; or equivalent combination of training and experience.Preferred education: Associates degree in public or business administration or related fieldKnowledge ofOffice practices & proceduresHuman relationsCity zoning & planning ordinancesEnglish & grammar.Skill inGeneral computer operation (Microsoft office), office equipment (personal computer, fax, copier, scanner)Ability toMaintain a pleasant, courteous, professional demeanorEstablish and maintain effective working relationship with the general public, other personnel and city officialsCommunicate effectively by telephone, email and in personMeet deadlines and multi task under pressureAnswer routine inquiries from the public, resolve complaints from angry citizens and government officials.Interpret variety of instructions in written, oral, picture or schedule formAdd, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbersComprehend & record figures accurately, copy material accurately & recognize grammatical & spelling errorsMaintain accurate records, screen mail, prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports, sort item categories according to established methodsGather, collate, & classify information about data, people or thingsOrganize, prioritize and carry out office work with minimal supervisionWorking ConditionsWork is performed in a normal office environment.CLASS TITLES OF POSITIONS DIRECTLY SUPERVISEDN/ABenefitsWe offer a complete benefits package to full-time employees including health care, dental, vision, retirement, deferred compensation plans, health saving accounts, educational assistance, life insurance, short and long-term disability, 13 holidays, 1 personal day, vacation, and sick leave.
