The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is currently looking to fill the position of Water & Sewer Mechanic. This is a full-time position available in the Water & Sewer department for an experienced mechanic.

Water Plant Mechanical Operator controls, maintains, and repairs the mechanical and hydraulic systems that treat and move water in a treatment facility. He ensures pumps, valves, and filtration systems work safely and efficiently. He also bridges the gap between water process management and heavy mechanical maintenance. Unlike standard plant operators who focus primarily on chemistry and water quality testing, a hydromechanical operator specializes in managing, monitoring, and repairing the physical machinery and hydraulic systems that move, filter, and control large volumes of water.

Core Responsibilities

• System Monitoring: Watch gauges, flowmeters, and computer control systems (SCADA) to track water flow and pressure.
• Equipment Maintenance: Lubricate, repair, and overhaul large pumps, electric motors, valves, and chemical feed systems.
• Process Control: Adjust valves and gates to regulate water levels and routing throughout the plant.
• Quality Testing: Monitor physical and hydraulic conditions to support the chemical treatment process.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical failures and hydraulic blockages to prevent plant downtime.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of hydraulics, fluid mechanics, and heavy machinery.
• Certifications: State-issued water treatment or distribution operator licenses are usually required.
• Problem Solving: Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and piping diagrams to fix complex systems.
• Physical Fitness: Capability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.

Work Environment

• Requires shift work, including weekends, holidays, and rotating night shifts for 24/7 operations.
• Involves working around heavy machinery, high-pressure pipes, and water treatment chemicals.

Education and Certification

1. Basic Prerequisites: A high school diploma or equivalent is universally mandatory. Technical trade training in mechanics or hydraulics is highly preferred.
2. State Licensing: Operators generally must obtain state-issued Water or Wastewater Operator Certifications (ranging from Class D/IV up to Class A/I for master levels).
3. Specialized Certifications: Depending on the specific facility, operators may need specialized Hydropower or Hydromechanical Certifications to work on massive high-pressure valve networks and dam operations.

Candidate should exhibit ability to articulate ideas and feedback to contributes to team’s overall effectiveness and success. Open and approachable communication style, good maintaining open lines of communication with all team members, has listening skills and empathy to create an environment of mutual respect and understanding with the team.
