Outsourced Accounting Consultant - Public Sector

Job Summary Plante Moran’s management consulting team focuses on delivering integrated solutions for municipal clients, helping them manage growth, leverage resources, and mitigate risks. The Municipal Finance Consultant provides comprehensive accounting and finance support to municipalities, collaborating with clients and colleagues to enhance operations and ensure accurate financial reporting. Responsibilities Provide financial staffing and related consulting support to municipalities. Assist municipal clients with accounting and finance functions including bank reconciliations, budget development, financial close reporting, and preparation for annual audits. Draft financial reports such as periodic budget-to-actual schedules and annual financial statements with related disclosures. Verify, allocate, and post transaction details to subsidiary accounts using documentation (bank statements, invoices, receipts, check stubs, and printouts). Compile and analyze financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts. Work independently or in teams to improve client accounting operations, including drafting policies and procedures. Analyze financial information on assets, liabilities, and equity; prepare balance sheets, statements of revenues and expenditures, and other position reports. Collaborate with consultants and clients to recommend continuous improvement initiatives. Supervise and train junior staff members. Qualifications General understanding of GASB and government fund accounting, client business systems, and industry requirements. Minimum of 2 years’ experience creating and using financial reports in a professional service firm, government, or school district. Proficiency with financial accounting systems and Excel. Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and minimum auto insurance coverage. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Management, Finance, or a related field. CPA or Master’s degree in accounting or a related field preferred but not required. Residency near or willingness to relocate to the Metro Detroit area. Up to 90% local and/or regional travel to client sites; limited overnight travel desired but not required. Non‑exempt position eligible for overtime beyond the 40‑hour work week.
