Job Description

The Cook I accurately and efficiently prepares, portions, cooks, and presents a variety of hot and cold food items for multiple meal periods, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special or catered events. This role supports consistent, high-quality food production while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, portion, and cook a variety of hot and cold food items for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special or catered events.
• Follow established recipes, portion controls, and presentation standards to ensure consistent quality and appearance of all menu items.
• Set up, stock, and maintain workstations with all necessary ingredients, tools, and equipment prior to and during service.
• Cook and plate food items in a timely manner to meet service schedules and customer expectations.
• Monitor food quality throughout preparation and service, adjusting seasoning, cooking times, and presentation as needed.
• Handle, store, and rotate food products properly to maintain freshness and minimize waste.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, including workstations, equipment, and storage areas.
• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards while handling and preparing food.
• Operate kitchen equipment safely and report any malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
• Collaborate with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth and efficient meal service.
• Assist with basic prep work such as chopping, measuring, and assembling ingredients as needed.
• Support special and catered events by preparing menu items according to event requirements and timelines.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to cook and prepare a variety of hot and cold food items.
• Experience with basic food preparation, including measuring, chopping, and assembling ingredients.
• Ability to follow recipes, portion guidelines, and presentation standards accurately.
• Strong attention to detail in food quality, taste, and presentation.
• Capability to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment during multiple meal periods.
• Knowledge of basic food safety and sanitation practices.
• Ability to operate standard kitchen equipment safely.
• Reliable time management and punctuality for scheduled shifts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience in a commercial kitchen or food service environment is beneficial.
• Experience supporting special functions or catered events is an advantage.
• Flexibility to assist with both cooking and prep responsibilities as needed.

Work Environment

This position follows a daytime schedule, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., supporting breakfast, lunch, and early preparation for other meal periods and events. You will work in a commercial kitchen environment using standard cooking equipment and tools, often on your feet for extended periods. The dress code includes black pants, slip-resistant shoes, a hat or hair net, and a chef jacket if available, to support safety, hygiene, and a professional appearance. The kitchen environment can be warm and busy during peak service times, requiring focus, coordination, and effective communication with the rest of the culinary team.

This is a Contract position based out of DeKalb, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.57 - $19.57/hr.
