Equipment Mechanic II

Job Title
Performs intermediate technical work in the repair and overhaul of automotive and mechanical equipment, gas and diesel motors and engines, performing preventive maintenance, and related work as apparent or assigned.
Essential Functions
Diagnoses, repairs and overhauls gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulic pneumatic and air conditioning systems. Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and replacing wiring; tests electronic ignition systems and makes necessary repairs. Rebuilds pumps, cylinders and valves. Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air brakes, steering and suspension components. Performs preventive maintenance on automotive, construction and specialized equipment. Repairs and replaces tires; realigns wheels and makes corrections using wheel alignment equipment. Performs state safety inspections. Fabricates replacement parts and metal for body repairs to vehicles and equipment. Receives and responds to calls for service; repairs vehicles and equipment on job site. Assists in training new Equipment Mechanics; recommends assignments and inspects the work of assigned personnel. Maintains cleanliness of shop area, tools and equipment. Completes any other assigned duties by supervisor. Provides excellent customer service when working with citizens, elected officials, and/or associates. Supports the overall City organization by executing the directives as set forth by the immediate supervisor and elected officials.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, maintenance and specialized equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment; ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and moderate experience repairing automotive, construction and specialized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain North Carolina Safety Inspection license within six months of employment. Valid commercial driver's license with B endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
