Medical Laboratory Scientist

At Houston Methodist, the Medical Laboratory Scientist position is responsible for performing both routine and complex analyses, requiring knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and equipment. The role utilizes critical thinking to resolve technical issues, ensures specimens are accessioned and processed expediently, and delivers high‑quality, cost‑effective laboratory results. FLSA Status Non‑exempt. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree. Experience: One year of work or training experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Certification: Must meet eligibility upon entry and obtain one of the following certifications within 18 months: Certified as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or categorical certification by Board of Certification (ASCP). Certified as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist by American Medical Technologists (AMT). Certified as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist by National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA). For HLA only: Medical Technologist (MT ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS ASCP), or certified by American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI). For Microbiology only: Medical Technologist (MT ASCP) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS ASCP), Microbiology (M ASCP), or Clinical microbiology registry from American Society for Microbiology (RM AAM). Skills and Abilities Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies through ongoing assessments. Proficient in spoken, written, and read English sufficient for patient and employee safety. Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, and colleagues with a customer‑service focus. Adapts to multiple priorities and organizes heavy workflow with minimal supervision. Maintains strong attention to detail and accuracy. Uses independent judgment to recognize problems, identify causes, and take corrective action. Basic computer proficiency; operates Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and Office software. Works independently with little or no direct supervision. Recognizes critical changes that affect patient care.
