Job Summary:

Under general supervision of the Special Education Teacher, the One-to-One Teacher’s Aide/Driver is responsible for assisting a certified Teacher in implementing a multi-sensory individualized educational plan (IEP) for an assigned child with Autism in a self-contained classroom with special emphasis on maintenance of discipline and working one on one with students. This position is also responsible for transporting and/or accompanying students to and from school in a company vehicle before and after normal school hours (approximately 2-hours per day)

Essential Functions:

• Meets with the teacher to review daily lesson plans and to contribute information and ideas as appropriate
• Works with student in a one on one situation to reinforce instruction and help them learn specific academic skills
• Works with student in small group learning situations, as assigned
• Observes and controls behavior according to established procedures
• Reports progress regarding student’s behavior and performance to teacher
• Provides vocational instruction according to expertise and student program (e.g., woodshop, photography, clerical)
• Assists in administering educational and/or behavioral tests
• Participates in special programs (e.g., assemblies, plays, cultural events) with one-on-one student, as required
• Participates in the maintenance of individual and classroom records including progress reports and daily attendance records in accordance with school policies; ensures confidentiality is maintained
• Responds appropriately to incidents and problems with one-on-one student to de-escalate him/her as quickly as possible; uses crisis intervention skills in communicating with child; participates in physical interventions, as necessary, in accordance with Company policies and procedures
• Attends and participates in faculty meetings, in-service programs and workshops to maintain professional knowledge and skills and keeps informed as to Company policies and programs that may impact students; maintains CPI and/or TCI training and utilizes its techniques
• Assists in maintaining health and safety of students by being aware of environment and the potential of student actions; assists the Teacher or specialist according to established guidelines and procedures
• Aides in hygiene and toileting for some students, as needed
• Assists students by providing behavioral examples, displaying values and norms, providing emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance; assists in directing group activities of students at lunch and throughout the school day
• May spend up to 25% of time safely transports students to/from school, home, activities, outings, etc. and ensures the students’ well-being throughout the transition
• Maintains all safety standards, laws, and company policies when riding in or operating any company vehicle; Notifies appropriate personnel immediately when any maintenance or damage problems arise
• Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned

Qualifications :

• Minimum of 48 college units
• Basic skills in working with emotionally disturbed children/adolescents or children/adolescents with Autism
• Working knowledge of child guidance principles and practices, basic academic subjects, including arithmetic, oral and written communication skills; safe practices in classroom activities, record-keeping techniques and health and safety regulations
• Working knowledge of crisis intervention skills and the medical and emergency procedures of the Company
• Ability to pass and utilize Crisis Prevention Intervention (C.P.I.) and/or Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training (T.C.I.) within three months of employment
• A valid California driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Company's insurance carrier
• Dependent upon the client population, prior experience working with severely emotionally disturbed or handicapped students or students with Autism is preferred
• Must fulfill all requirements of employment, including clearance of all required background records (e.g. Department of Justice, Child Abuse, California Community Care Licensing, County Sanction List, etc.), professional, physical examination, and drug testing
