Primary Function:
The Sign Language Facilitator's primary role as a member of the educational team is to facilitate communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and classroom teacher, administrators, peers, and other school staff.
Representative Essential Duties:
• Monitor D/HH students' understanding of all auditory information within the educational setting and facilitate communication between the D/HH student and his/her general education teachers, students and other school staff as appropriate in the student's preferred communication mode(s).
• Preview classroom setting (including lighting, placement, availability of captioning, etc.) and modify physical environment as needed to ensure the provision of equal access to visual and auditory information for D/HH students. • Preview instructional lessons and materials to ensure accurate facilitation of instructional content. • Collaborate with the teacher of the D/HH and other school staff to ensure the needs of the student are met, and serves as liaison within the school environment, promoting positive and cooperative relationships. • Monitor student comprehension and provide instructional reinforcement as needed, under the direction of the teacher of the D/HH and other school staff. Introduce and explain vocabulary, repeat and reinforce classroom instruction, fosters appropriate classroom communication strategies and student self-advocacy skills, coordinate the provision of lecture notes, and perform other tasks as appropriate to ensure D/HH students have equal access to the auditory information in the regular education classroom, under the direction of the teacher of D/HH and other school staff, and in accordance with student IEPs.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
• ASL certification is not required.
• Experience in communicating with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) individuals.
• Specialized training or the willingness to participate in training in the use of assistive devices, amplification and language facilitation techniques.
• Working knowledge or ability to attain knowledge of assistive technology and communication devices. • Understanding the potential impact of hearing loss on communication development.
• Ability to handle a variety of formats and situations (videos, lab work, theater, languages, athletics, etc.) that are applicable to the educational level.
• Clear, easily understandable speech; expressive facial animation a plus
• Knowledge of or interest in learning about the lip-reading process
• Ability to paraphrase information on the student's language level
• Possess effective interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintain accurate and precise records
• Ability to work with highly confidential information
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback • Must pass pre-employment criminal history check

Duties are performed in a general school setting; read normal print and a computer screen; work with frequent interruptions; work independently; frequent walking, standing, sitting, some stooping, bending and reaching; read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at the appropriate grade level; math skills at the appropriate grade level proficiency; judgment and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; copying, coordinating and demonstrating.
