Job Description

Job Title: Substitute Bus Driver


Minimum Qualifications:

1. Meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. (Must pass background screening)
2. Must have the physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
3. Must have the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships
4. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills (*may be waived by the superintendent)
5. Valid Alabama (Class B or above) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger and school bus endorsement.
6. Such alternatives to the qualifications listed above or below as the Pelham Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Observe all traffic laws, safety regulations, policies, and procedures regarding school buses in accordance with Federal, State, and local government agencies, and the policies of the Pelham Board of Education.
2. Demonstrates the ability to work with school-age children.
3. Keep a professional appearance and perform duties in a manner that will promote good public relations.
4. Ability to remain both drug and alcohol free in the workplace and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing according to PBOE policy.
5. Be regular and punctual in attendance and let the supervisor know who you are subbing for daily.
6. Maintain appropriate student management and report student incidents to the appropriate supervisors.
7. Cooperate with the principal, Transportation Coordinator, and parents to solve discipline problems.
8. Conduct bus evacuation drills in accordance with approved procedure if you are subbing during evacuation drills.
9. Transport authorized passengers only, follow the assigned time schedule, and route.
10. Discharge students at authorized stops only.
11. Keeps assigned bus clean by daily sweeping.
12. Maintains effective communication with supervisors in case of emergency.
13. Maintains the ability to be contacted during school hours in case of unexpected emergency situations where students require transportation on the days you are subbing.
14. Check the bus before and after each operation for mechanical defects, unattended students, and any items left on the bus.
15. Notify proper authority in case of mechanical failure and/or late arrival.
16. Keep bus properly fueled at all times.
17. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately should they occur.
18. Complete and submit all required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
19. Maintains and implements the established rules and procedures for transportation.

20. Attend meetings, training, and in-service presentations related to job functions, including presentations regarding behavior management, crisis management strategies, and emergency procedures. Have the ability to complete evacuation drills if necessary.
21. Carry out all responsibilities at all assigned locations.
22. Be regular and punctual in attendance
23. Adhere to all Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures, and federal, state, and local laws.
24. Clock in and out daily; also, report the driver you are covering as a sub-driver do this in accordance with Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures, and applicable law.
25. Maintain proper and professional relationships with students, school system employees, and school visitors.
26. Perform assigned job duties while filling in. In a courteous and professional manner.
27. Properly care for equipment and material resources of the school system.
28. Maintain confidentiality regarding school and/or workplace matters in accordance with federal and state law.
29. Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Superintendent and/or supervisor(s).
