General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate semiskilled work maintaining flowers and shrubbery at various County facilities; performing research and selecting appropriate materials for each job assigned; recommending and implementing landscaping and installation of flowers and other plant life; watering, weeding and mulching flowers and shrubbery as needed to maintain an attractive appearance. Performs other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of Grounds Maintenance Lead.

Essential Functions

Plants, transplants, fertilizes, applies chemicals, waters, prunes, weeds, and mulches flower beds and plant areas.

Maintains flowers, bushes, trees, and shrubs.

Pours, mixes, and uses fertilizer, pesticides, and other chemical materials.

Selects the appropriate materials for each job assigned.

Operates a motor vehicle to transport materials and equipment, as appropriate to the position.

Prepares and/or maintains workorders and records using computers as necessary.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge operating hedge trimmers, garden sprayers, shoves, rakes and basic gardening tools; some knowledge preparing and maintaining workorders and records; some knowledge using Standard Office Software and Standard Accounting Software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to understand and apply governmental accounting practices in maintenance of financial records; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in gardening and/or horticulture related experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jackhammer work, garbage recycle plant).

Special Requirements

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver’s license in the State of Georgia with a favorable driving history (MVR).
