The Pharmacist is responsible for filling medication orders. Monitoring patient drug therapies is a key responsibility. Providing drug information to healthcare providers is essential. This position oversees the routine operations of the pharmacy department. The Pharmacist manages all clinical aspects of patient drug therapy. In the absence of the Pharmacy Director, the Pharmacist may assume leadership responsibilities. Essential duties of the Director may be performed by the Pharmacist.
Medication Preparation & Dispensing: Medications are prepared, filled, labeled, and dispensed accurately and safely. It is important to ensure all medications meet legal and quality standards.
Clinical Pharmacy Services: Patient drug therapies are monitored for safety, appropriateness, and effectiveness. Age-specific criteria in medication therapy are assessed, interpreted, and communicated. Drug information and education are provided to physicians, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Participation in clinical duties as required by Medical Staff and departmental policies is expected.
Departmental Operations: Adequate drug supply is maintained and managed. Day-to-day records of Pharmacy Department transactions are kept as required by law and policy. Pharmacy technicians and other technical personnel are supervised. Participation in formulary management and Automated Dispensing Machine changes occurs at the direction of the Pharmacy Director.
Emergency Response: Rapid Response Teams and Code Blue situations may require participation.
Quality, Compliance & Professional Development: Annual pharmacy competency evaluations using the Pharmacy Competency Checklist are completed. Participation in approved continuing education programs to maintain and enhance professional skills is expected. Compliance with the organization's Compliance Program and Code of Conduct is important. Any observed or suspected unethical, illegal, or questionable conduct should be reported. Effective interpersonal relationships with all healthcare team members and departments must be maintained.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Strong clinical knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, and age-specific medication considerations is necessary. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The ability to work independently and make sound clinical decisions is essential. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in medication preparation and dispensing is crucial. Leadership and supervisory skills are important for this role. Proficiency in pharmacy information systems and automated dispensing technology is required. A commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance is expected.
Physical Requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers is necessary for tasks such as preparing IV admixtures and typing. The ability to lift and carry light loads up to 40 pounds is required. Stooping, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods of 4-8 hours is necessary. Physical capability to operate pharmacy equipment is also required.
