This University Police Officer provides police, safety and security services and protection to Cheyney University students, employees, property, grounds, facilities, and the general public in a fair and impartial manner. This is basic university police service work that includes the provision of routine and customary university police, safety & security services. The University Police Officer works under the direction of the Director of Public Safety or his/her designee and supports the overall educational mission of Cheyney University & the Department of Public Safety & Emergency Management through community policing & engagement, and proactive enforcement and crime prevention services.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Investigate criminal incidents and violations of university policy and missing persons cases
• Acts as custodian of found personal property and evidence being held for court presentation
• Maintains assigned equipment, vehicles and/or bike in good condition
• Responds to calls for assistance, fire, safety and other campus emergencies
• Performs law enforcement, public safety & security services at university events
• Files charges for violations of Commonwealth law and University policy violations. Enforces vehicle code violations, directs traffic, and enforces university parking regulations
• Make arrests, serve warrants, transports prisoners and take fingerprints
• Transports funds for university deposits
• Testifies in criminal & civil court and attends arraignments and hearings as well as university student conduct hearings
• Conducts routine and unscheduled complete & full security checks of university buildings and facilities
• Supports campus public safety efforts by checking fire extinguishers for serviceability during routine building security checks. Participating in fire drills and ensuring compliance with fire safety procedures & regulations.
• Collaborates with and supports & assists all divisions within the Department of Public Safety, including police, security, communications, transportation, emergency management, environmental health & safety to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to campus safety.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education, Training, and/or Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Formal training in the provision of basic police services accompanied by certification through Act 120
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license
• Ability to meet required qualifications regarding strength, agility and health

Knowledge & Skills, Abilities:

• Knowledge of Commonwealth laws, rules, and regulations governing motor vehicle operation and personal conduct for employees or visitors at Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Universities; and of modern police practices
• Knowledge of Commonwealth provisions for emergency situations.
• Knowledge of evidence based policing and 21st Century policing techniques
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine proper courses of action.
• Ability to enforce laws and regulations fairly while maintaining a respectful and professional demeanor.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Experience working with a college-age population, parking enforcement, and crowd control is preferred.
