Firefighter

The South Placer Fire District is a tax-supported governmental agency that provides emergency and non-emergency services to the Community of the South Placer Fire District and other communities under local agreements and the California State Mutual Aid Plan. This work unit is responsible for fire station management, station shift supervision, crew supervision, and tasks associated with fire suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency rescue, medical treatment, and pre/post-emergency activities. Employees shall be first in command of the fire station to which they are assigned. The work unit works 24-hour shifts or as needed for emergencies or staffing call back.

Working under the supervision of the Shift Battalion Chiefs, this employee's primary duty is to respond to emergency situations and perform tasks associated with fire suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency rescue, and medical treatment. When responding to such emergencies, the employee shall don all required protective clothing, and the employee may:

• Receive and implement directives from ranking employees
• Size up, report on, and formulate tactical mitigation strategies for emergencies
• Clearly communicate the incident situation status, resources status, and mitigation strategies
• Direct, supervise and assist crews to carry out emergency mitigation strategies
• When appropriate, assume command of incidents until relieved by a ranking employee
• When necessary, be assigned incident command positions of branch leader, division leader, or group supervisor, which will involve directing multiple resources
• Determine safety measures needed for each emergency operation and convey these measures clearly to those crews assigned
• Remove hoses, nozzles, ladders, and other appropriate equipment from the apparatus, connecting hoses to the water supply and direct extinguishing agent as appropriate
• Drive and operate emergency apparatus and other equipment associated with fire suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency rescue, medical treatment, and district operations
• Operate tools associated with fire suppression, hazardous condition mitigation, emergency rescue, medical treatment, and district operations
• Troubleshoot equipment and apparatus and make emergency repairs
• Carry ladders, erect ladders, and climb ladders typically while carrying equipment
• Create openings in structures to allow access, egress, or facilitate fire suppression
• Move, cover, and otherwise protect personal property
• Walk or jog for extended distances carrying equipment and/or individuals
• Provide basic life support and assist with advanced life support
• Provide continuous patient and situation assessment
• Prepare individuals for transport to a medical treatment facility and transport patients while either driving the ambulance or providing appropriate treatment
• Triage multiple injury emergencies and manage medical treatment for such emergencies
• Remove patients/victims from difficult-to-access locations
• Perform rescues that involve moving waters or stagnant bodies of water
• Gather and load equipment onto the vehicle for return to the facility

It should be noted that many of the tasks performed in this job require extended, strenuous physical exertion in dangerous conditions. The employee shall work as a team member, all of whose members are interdependent on other team members for their safety and for the successful accomplishment of the tasks. Due to the wide range of activities and conditions inherent in this job, the frequencies and duration of physical activities may vary significantly from day to day, and employees may be required to perform other duties related to the district's mission statement.

Minimum Qualifications:

• The employee shall be a high school graduate or equivalent
• The employee shall be a minimum of 18 years of age
• The employee shall maintain a valid California Class A, B, or C driver's license with a Firefighter endorsement.
• The employee shall maintain a valid Medical Examination Report (DL 51) form for a CDL or complete medical requirements for a non-commercial driver's license with a Firefighter endorsement per the department of motor vehicles.
• The employee shall maintain a valid BLS/CPR card from American Heart or Red Cross
• The employee shall maintain a valid CA state Emergency Medical Technician certification or CA state Paramedic Card
• Hazardous Materials First Responders Operational Certificate
• ICS 200 Certificate
• CSFM Rescue Systems 1 Certificate or CSFM Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations Certificate
• CSFM Management 1 Certificate (obtained prior to 12/31/16) OR CSFM Company Officer 2A (Human Resource Management for Company Officers)
• CSFM Command 1A Certificate (obtained prior to 12/31/16) OR CSFM Company Officer 2D (All-Risk Command Operations for Company Officers)
• CSFM Certified Driver Operator 1A and 1B (old curriculum) OR CSFM Certified Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Pump Apparatus (new curriculum)
• CSFM Certified Firefighter II
• Obtain qualifications/certifications for Engine Boss per NWCG/CICCS. (2006 Editions or newer/ this requirement to be completed within twelve (12) months of hire date)
• The employee shall have a total of three (3) years of experience as a full paid, full-time Firefighter or Engineer or Captain (with designations of EMT and or Paramedic)
• Successful completion of South Placer Fire Engineer Task Book within twelve (12) months of hire date.

Supplemental Information:

Any combination of training, education, or experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

• Training from a recognized national, state, or privately operated training facility in the area of fire science, emergency services, or other related fields
• An educational degree from a recognized national, state, or privately operated training facility in the area of fire science, emergency services, or other related fields

The Selection Process: All applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications, with the best-qualified candidates being invited to continue in the selection process. The process may include but is not limited to a written exam, assessment center, and structured oral interview. The final portion will be a Chief's interview. As part of the pre-employment process, the District may conduct a background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, and a psychological evaluation. All job applicants must prove eligibility to work in the United States. The South Placer Fire District reserves the right to make changes to the announced examination process. Depending on district needs, the eligibility list generated after this process may be terminated after one year or earlier.
