Job Title: Test Technician – NanoIR Microscopes
Job Description

The Test Technician plays a hands-on role in the alignment, calibration, and testing of advanced NanoIR microscope systems that combine atomic force microscopy with tunable infrared laser technology. This position ensures each built-to-order system meets strict performance specifications before shipment by performing detailed quality checks, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, and collaborating closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, R&D, and Applications teams. The role involves following and updating test procedures, supporting new product introductions, and contributing to continuous improvement of build and test processes in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.

Responsibilities

  • Align infrared lasers and calibrate atomic force microscopy systems to meet defined performance specifications.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance on AFM systems, IR laser components, and combined AFM/IR microscope systems.
  • Run standardized tests and verify overall system performance prior to shipment.
  • Calibrate and rework units as needed to meet delivery timelines and quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues that arise during testing and validation.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, R&D, Engineering, and Applications teams to validate performance and resolve technical issues.
  • Collaborate with assemblers and engineers to improve build processes and test procedures for greater efficiency and reliability.
  • Prepare microscopes and related equipment for shipment, ensuring all documentation and configurations are complete and accurate.
  • Support new product introductions by executing test plans, providing feedback, and helping refine procedures.
  • Train team members on test, calibration, and quality procedures to ensure consistent practices across the team.
  • Initiate internal quality reports and non-conformance material reports (IBQ/NCMRs) when issues are identified.
  • Follow existing test procedures and update documentation as needed to capture process improvements and quality requirements.
  • Take on additional related tasks as required to support production, testing, and continuous improvement activities.
Essential Skills
  • 2–4 years of experience in a manufacturing or test environment, or 0–1 years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills for complex instrumentation and precision systems.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills, including experience working with electronic components and assemblies.
  • Ability to use test equipment such as oscilloscopes and other electronic measurement tools.
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, and engineering drawings.
  • Experience performing quality testing and following ISO-related standards or procedures.
  • Proficiency in basic electronics, including component-level understanding and practical application.
  • Hands-on skills with soldering and rework of electronic assemblies when needed.
  • Ability to follow detailed test procedures and accurately document results.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset with the ability to systematically identify and resolve issues.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is highly valued and can support growth into test engineering roles.
  • Experience with atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning probe microscopy, or FTIR spectroscopy is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ISO standards and quality management practices is beneficial.
  • Experience working with nanoanalysis, microscopy, or analytical instrumentation environments is advantageous.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Manufacturing, R&D, Engineering, and Applications.
  • Interest in developing a long-term career in test, engineering, or advanced scientific instrumentation.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly document test results and share findings with technical teams.
  • Motivation to contribute to scientific progress by supporting instruments used in life sciences, pharma, microscopy, nanoanalysis, and industrial applications.
Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing and test environment focused on high-precision NanoIR microscopes and advanced analytical instruments. You will work with technologies that combine atomic force microscopy and tunable infrared lasers, using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, electronic measurement tools, and calibration fixtures. The setting is fast-paced and detail-driven, with close collaboration across Manufacturing, R&D, Engineering, and Applications teams to ensure product performance and quality. The broader organization supports scientists and researchers in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, microscopy, nanoanalysis, and industrial applications, providing opportunities to contribute to meaningful scientific breakthroughs and practical solutions in the lab and beyond. The culture emphasizes innovation, continuous improvement, and professional growth, including the potential to move into more engineering-focused responsibilities over time.
