Maintenance Mechanic

The Maintenance Mechanic will support BYU Food Services by maintaining, repairing, and installing dining and specialized equipment on campus. The team emphasizes professionalism, skill development, and mentoring student employees while upholding the mission and standards of Brigham Young University.

Responsible for maintaining and installing dining equipment, completing service requests and preventive maintenance, ensuring safe work practices, coordinating with requestors, other shops, and subcontractors, and helping train student employees. Training and onboarding new hires, coordinating equipment installation and repair timelines, overseeing building maintenance within assigned areas, managing inventory and shop cleanliness, assisting other crews, and coordinating subcontractors. This role requires advanced refrigeration and mechanical skills.

What you'll do in this position:

• Manage equipment installations, repair, and maintenance projects on campus.
• Responsible for budget, quality, schedule, and safety on each project.
• Procure materials and equipment delivery with vendors and suppliers.
• Assuring personal safety and the safety of others around the work areas.
• Hands on work to complete projects; including demolition and installation, etc.
• Installation and repair of food related equipment
• Repair and maintenance of existing food related equipment.
• On-call work assignments.

• Help with pre-construction meetings which include project phasing, schedules, reviewing construction documents, equipment selection, installation verification, equipment startup, and commissioning.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

• Two years of refrigeration experience or a two-year refrigeration certification from a technical school and the ability to get the EPA Certification to be able to handle the various refrigerants we use on campus.
• Have a basic skill level and understanding of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding food service equipment, ice machines, furnaces and sheet metal work.
• The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness.
• Has a valid Utah Drivers' License
• Has excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• A physical and lift test is required and includes the following:

• Physical Effort Moderate Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Handles a large auger for 30 minutes to 1-hour, 23 times per week; face and hand protection is required.

• Environment - Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions because of unavoidable need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc. Works inside cabinets and other confined spaces up to 3 hours per day; gloves, a coat, and head protection are recommended for safety. Works in freezer environments with temperatures around 20F for approximately 40 minutes per day; appropriate cold-weather gear (gloves, coat, headgear) is required.

• Hazards - Moderate existing or potential hazards. Uses ladders up to 16 feet about 1-hour per day; a safety harness is required when working above 6 feet.

Preferred:

• Five years of refrigeration, steam, flight, and regular dish machine experience. Two years of ice machine installation, maintenance, & repair experience. At least two years of management, mentoring, and training experience
• Experienced in HVAC diagnosis, repair and maintenance including furnaces, air conditioning, water heaters, refrigerators, gas, and electric ranges. Experienced in the reading of blueprints both electrical and mechanical and excellence in troubleshooting and repair of foodservice equipment and refrigeration.

Typical Starting Pay: Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and is competitive with current market rates.

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate's job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive a higher offer.
