GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Provides occupational therapy and implements treatments to all students enrolled in Children’s Services as per IEP/IFSP mandates with a physician’s referral. Performs related work as requested.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and the clinical supervision of the OT Senior, an employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and carrying out a program of functional therapeutic activities.
Work follows recognized practices in the occupational therapy field and requires imagination and skill in employing these practices to individual students. Consent for treatment and equipment is prescribed by a physician in accordance with standard therapy practices.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performance of the following tasks may place you at risk for acquiring Hepatitis B virus.

Provides treatment for all students enrolled in Children’s Services using goal-directed, developmentally-sequenced activities in the areas of self-help/adaptive, perceptual motor, fine motor coordination and sensory domains, to enhance educational functioning
Assists in the facilitation and restoration or maintenance of optimum independence for all students
Recommends adaptive equipment for carry through of goals
Evaluates student’s functional level; recommends and implements an occupational therapy program in accordance with the student’s IEP/IFSP mandates and a physician’s referral
Prepares reports on student’s progress in and reactions to occupational therapy, and maintains records of each student’s work and progress as required by regulation and in keeping with agency standards.

Assists in conducting in-service training programs as requested by administrative superior.
Positions and transfers individuals as necessary

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Good knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in occupational therapy
Good knowledge of the possible hazards to patients during therapy and of necessary precautionary and remedial measures
Ability to evaluate a student’s physical condition and developmental level to determine appropriate techniques
Ability to prepare comprehensive reports on the status and progress of the students receiving therapy
Knowledge of proper body mechanics and transfer techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Graduate of an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy

Licensed as a Registered Occupational Therapist in the State of New York
Readiness to learn and utilize relevant agency computer applications.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Candidate must possess a valid NYS Driver’s License at the time of hire, must maintain the NYS license for the duration of employment, and if they were to drive their own vehicle on Agency business, adhere to the Agency Fleet Safety Driver’s Policy/Procedures.
Documentation of a current Mantoux tuberculosis test must be provided prior to beginning employment and annually thereafter.
A candidate for this position is considered to have regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with consumers and must undergo a criminal background check prior to assuming their job responsibilities.
A minimum of 15 hours of staff development training is required annually.
As part of an ongoing agency initiative, AHRC Suffolk has partnered with CQL to perform Personal Outcome conversations with the men and women we support. As part of this initiative, all staff may be required to complete training in order to contribute as interviewers, as follow-up staff, and/or as interpreters when interviews are being conducted.
