Phlebotomist

Summary

The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens through venipuncture, capillary puncture, or heel stick. Also collects nasal washings, nasopharyngeal specimens, throat cultures and performs iontophoresis to collect sweat. Performs patient registrations in Epic and orders lab tests in the LIS as requested by the physician. Communicates well with the patient and family, and with other laboratory staff regarding specimen requirements, ordering, and miscellaneous requests. Performs a limited number of basic tests and procedures, follows hospital policies and procedures, and assists with phones and other miscellaneous office duties as requested.

Responsibilities

• Identify patient, collect, label, and deliver blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick using appropriate age‑specific techniques.
• Receive and process laboratory specimens, maintaining specimen integrity for transport to lab.
• Perform patient registrations in Epic and enter tests listed on physician's script into the LIS.
• Collect non‑blood laboratory specimens following proper procedure, including NP and throat specimens.
• Perform iontophoresis procedure for collection of sweat.
• Perform limited basic testing procedures with accuracy and precision, including monitoring of QC and administering Glucola for glucose tolerance testing.
• Maintain work area neat and clean, and maintain supplies at an adequate level.
• Collect blood cultures using proper technique to avoid contamination.
• Participate in education efforts of the department, including completing continuing education and training new employees in phlebotomy procedures.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and lab staff regarding specimen requirements and miscellaneous requests.
• Other duties as required.

Technical Expertise

• Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for communicating via telephone or face‑to‑face with patients, families, physicians, and other staff. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks timely and accurately.
• Experience in healthcare is preferred.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent required. Graduate of Medical Assistant program or Phlebotomy Program is preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.
• 1 year phlebotomy experience preferred and required if applicant is not a graduate of a Medical Assistant program or Phlebotomy Program. Pediatric phlebotomy experience preferred.
• No years of experience supervising.

Employment Details

Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Day shift on site.
