Department Profile: The Emergency Department Clinical Evaluation Unit (CEU) is a 31‑bed acute care unit that provides care to patients across multiple service lines and levels, excluding pediatrics and ICU. The team—consisting of RNs and ED Techs—care for a population of emergency department observation patients with a stay of 24hours or less, following standard protocols in collaboration with an ED provider. The goal is to decompress the emergency department. You will join an exceptional team that delivers extraordinary care and ensures an excellent patient experience every time. Job Summary: As a Registered Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will prioritize service while caring for the whole person in a patient‑centered environment. You will provide and supervise direct and indirect total nursing care, utilizing the nursing process—assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating—to achieve patient and care team health outcomes. Full Time: 3–12‑hour shifts Available: Nights – Shift (7 p.m.–7 a.m.) Knowledge, Skills, Education, Abilities: Knowledge of the scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and NCA Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process Knowledge of professional theory, practice, and procedure Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and leadership Ability to teach patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care Ability to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, treatment, and follow‑up Ability to use fine‑motor skills Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life‑support requirements designated by the work area or organization Ability to record activities, document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation, and re‑evaluation of patient status Ability to use a computer and learn new software programs Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools Ability to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking Ability to remain focused and organized Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions Working knowledge and completion of appropriate JCAHO and other regulatory requirements Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Preferred: 1 or more years of RN experience in an emergency department or inpatient setting with mixed acuity Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate’s Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.
