Join GHD as a Project Manager within the GHD FIRST team to lead an Emergency Response/Preparedness and environmental program. This opportunity can be based out of the Chicago office. Who we are looking for As a Project Manager at GHD, you will mentor and guide the team and take the lead in environmental emergencies, collaborating with clients and agencies to ensure effective response and resolution. Your role includes business development and client expansion activities, with expertise in environmental engineering, geology, or related fields. Requirements include 5+ years of project management experience, including a proven track record in emergency response, client relationship management, and business development. You will conduct environmental sampling and monitoring and spearhead regional visibility initiatives, driving environmental stewardship and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and a commitment to making a difference are essential. Education and location: This role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or a related field. The position is based in Chicago, with the GHD FIRST team delivering turnkey, 24/7/365 incident response and management services across North America. Responsibilities Accountable for one or more medium-sized projects of low to moderate complexity with a small- to medium-sized team. Create project vision and planning documents; manage implementation, reporting, and performance to deliver on time, within budget, and to scope. Document preparation: prepare moderately complex documents using office software; gather and summarize data for reports. Stakeholder management: plan and deliver stakeholder engagement activities to develop effective working relationships and address stakeholder needs and concerns. Personal capability building: participate in assessment and development planning, maintain external professional accreditation where relevant, and engage in ongoing education to stay current on technology and best practices. Continuous improvement: contribute to reviewing operations and identifying improvements. Work scheduling and allocation: assign short-term work to a team to meet timelines. Project assurance: conduct assurance reviews and facilitate actions to resolve issues for senior stakeholders’ confidence. Project scope definition: manage the delivery of research, workshops, and other activities to define project deliverables. Project planning: produce workstream or project plans aligned with the project management framework. Project reporting and review: draft project reviews, summaries, and recommendations to support stakeholder evaluation and change decisions. Project resource management: manage deployment of project resources, monitor costs, provide forecasts, and report variances. Project risk and issue management: identify risks and issues, escalate where appropriate, and implement solutions. Project closeout and handover: draft user documentation and training; contribute to post-project reviews and lessons learned. Project team management: lead a small project team, coordinate activities, and foster team capability through coaching and mentoring. Requirements management: coordinate requirements elicitation, analysis, documentation, and verification across project phases. Willingness to respond to call-outs during non-routine hours. Act as the first point of contact for clients on new emergency projects, with ability to delegate tasks and request support as needed from GHD FIRST team. Education Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or a related field Experience General Experience: 3–6 years of experience across a range of situations and advising others Managerial Experience: supervision of junior colleagues (7–12 months) Experience in emergency preparedness, air monitoring, environmental assessment/sampling, ICS, SCAT, PHMSA Experience with railroad and pipeline-related emergencies is a plus Benefits 401K – Eligible to participate on the first day of the month following 3 months of service PTO – Paid time off with ongoing rest, sick, and personal time; starting at 16 days per year and increasing with years of service Holiday Pay – GHD observes 9 holidays per year Wellness Benefit – Wellness reimbursement program; up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $250 annually Salary: $68,888.00 - $114,813.00, varies based on location and experience.
