Location Office of the State Fire Marshal, Northeast Regional Office, 2 S. Bond Street Bel Air, MD 21014 Main Purpose The main purpose of this position is the enforcement of State laws in the field of fire prevention and fire inspection in order to preserve life and protect property from fire and other emergency conditions. Position Duties Conduct fire safety inspections of new and existing structures by identifying occupancy classification, computing allowable occupant load, inspecting the means of egress, and verifying construction for additions or remodeling projects to ensure compliance with local and State laws. Conduct fire safety inspections of facilities requiring licenses from other State agencies (health care, schools, correctional facilities, day camps, migrant camps) to ensure fire prevention measures are in place before issuing a license. Conduct inspections of public assembly places (bars, restaurants, exhibition halls, commercial buildings, hotels, motels) to ensure public safety and inspect and witness licensed public fireworks displays. Prepare correspondence communicating observations of fire code violations, ensuring reports reflect inspection findings in accordance with applicable codes and standards. Maintain records, files, and related documents of inspections in accordance with record‑keeping policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Experience: None. Notes on Substitutions Candidates may substitute experience inspecting buildings and other places of public assembly for compliance with fire prevention and safety laws, codes and regulations on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in firefighter classifications or firefighter specialty codes in the fire inspection field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience performing fire safety inspections in buildings with multiple uses. Fire Safety Inspector certification. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland if duties require operation of a motor vehicle. Special Requirements Employees are assigned duties in a specific service area of the State. Initial drug screening, a physical examination, and a complete criminal background investigation are required before permanent appointment. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection. Employees must successfully meet NFPA 1031 standards for Fire Safety Inspector I before completion of probation. Employees are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09. Benefits Contractual employees working 30 or more hours a week (or an average of 130 hours per month) with an employment contract may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and dependents under the State Employees and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program. The State covers 75% of premiums; employees pay 25%. Optional dental, accidental death, and life insurance may be elected with full employee cost.
