QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Previous successful coaching experience in an assigned sport (major sports). Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to studying new theories and procedures. Role model for student athletes through instruction and actions. REPORTS TO: The athletic director and the high school principals. SUPERVISES: Advises, coordinates, and supports staff of high school and middle school assistant coaches alongside the athletic director and respective principal. JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success; to promote sportsmanship, character development, self‑discipline, confidence, and pride; to enhance personal knowledge and skills through clinics and ongoing education. General Expectations The success of athletic programs significantly influences the community’s image; public exposure and community/parent pressure for winning performance must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and mental health. The position involves extended time, risk of injury, and due‑process considerations. The job description provides sufficient guidance; in cases not specifically covered, a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. Duties and Responsibilities Maintain comprehensive knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the governing board and ensure their implementation by the entire sports staff. Understand existing system, state, and league regulations; implement consistently and interpret them for the staff. Adhere to the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Define the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff; design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure overall program awareness. Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth and clinic attendance per local clinic policy. Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and analyze staff effectiveness at season’s end. Maintain discipline, resolve grievances, and increase morale and cooperation. Perform additional duties assigned by the athletic director or principal. Assist the athletic director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament requirements. Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices, adhere to facility times, and coordinate with maintenance and school employees. Document state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Ensure proper safeguards for equipment maintenance and protection. Advise the athletic director on policy or procedural changes. Serve as a mentor to each athlete, promoting trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Monitor athlete grades and conduct. Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards during practices, games, and travel. Deliver training rules and sport regulations to each athlete. Initiate injury, medical attention, and emergency policies. Complete paperwork for disabling injuries on proper forms and submit within 24 hours. Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Determine discipline, set due‑process procedures, and involve parents for eligibility changes. Assist athletes in college or advanced education selection. Participate in budgeting with the athletic director and establish requirements for the season; recommend equipment specifications within budget. Accountable for all equipment; recover lost or unreturned items; issue, store, and recondition equipment; submit annual inventory and current records. Mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitor equipment rooms and coach offices; authorize entry and requisition permissions. Allow athletes to enter authorized school areas at appropriate times. Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games; check cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving when custodians are not on duty. Instill respect for equipment and school property. Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings. Promote the sport by recruiting athletes not in another program and through media, little league, and other methods. Ensure quality, effectiveness, and validity of oral or written releases to local media. Maintain public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
