Firefighter/EMT

The City of Bangor, Maine Fire Department is accepting applications to fill immediate openings for Firefighter/EMT position. This position plays a critical role in the protection of community in a fast-paced, high-volume emergency services environment.

The Bangor Fire Department is the second largest professional fire department in the State of Maine, protecting a city of 31,000 that is rich in history and is the commercial and social center of Northern, Central, and Eastern Maine. In addition to providing fire protection and emergency medical services, Bangor Fire provides a variety of other response/services including a Heavy Rescue that provides technical rescue capabilities within the region, a marine response with 2 boats including the only fire boat in the region, opportunities to serve on the Police Department's Special Response Team, and EMS support to large events at the Maine Savings Amphitheater and the Cross Insurance Center. Bangor Firefighters work an attractive rotating schedule of two (2), twenty-four (24) hour days per week (1day on, 1 day off, 1 day on, 5 days off) with NO FORCED OVERTIME or residency requirement. Firefighters also receive a highly competitive wage package with a pay range of $61,261.20 - $74,627.28 (DOE), plus an additional $2.00 an hour for all hours assigned to the ambulance. The Bangor Fire Department offers educational incentives of $2,500 for EMT-A and $5,000 for EMT-P certifications, as well as other educational incentives.

Requirements include possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license, high school diploma or equivalent and possess a Maine or National Registry EMT License.Applicants will undergo an extensive evaluation including written fire exam and a Bangor Fire Department physical ability test. Applicants who present a valid (within last 6 months) IAFF/IAFC Candidate Physical Ability Test card will be excused from physical ability test. Successful applicants will be required to pass a background check and psychological evaluation.

BFD welcomes applicants with career department experience and qualifications to apply. Lateral transfer for pay and vacation accrual up to 6 years of experience or step g is possible as outlined in the current Local 772 collective bargaining agreement.

Anticipated Start Date: October 5, 2026.
