The Principal Director is responsible for building the leadership capacity of elementary principals and assistant principals along with their leadership teams.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports developing the leadership capacity of school leaders and school leadership teams, focusing on instructional leadership, pedagogy, data analysis, intervention, building a positive school culture, and providing high-quality professional learning for their staff members.
- Builds a positive school culture and increases engagement with families.
- Increases the knowledge of elementary principals around the implementation of the science of reading research into daily literacy instruction to improve student reading levels to be on grade level by third grade.
- Builds the leadership competencies of school leaders to understand the Plan, Do, Study, and Act process for school improvement.
- Works with the Chief Academic Officer-Elementary to articulate clear, specific, and ambitious performance targets at the beginning of the school year.
- Evaluates mid and end-of-year progress of schools, programs, and initiatives, holding parties accountable and helping adjust strategy and approach to achieve targets set at the beginning of the school year in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer-Elementary.
- Maintains frequent and ongoing contact with schools, spending approximately 80% of the time in schools.
- Supports the principal and assistant principals by observing, providing feedback, and coaching.
- Serves as a thought partner with principals to solve complex problems that exist in an urban school district.
- Collaborates with other middle and high school principal directors for vertical articulation.
- Collaborates with central office personnel to provide the appropriate resources to address the needs of schools and to ensure cross-functional support in service to schools.
- Conducts monthly cluster meetings for elementary principals and assistant principals
- Manages the planning and delivery of professional learning experiences that support school leaders' development during the summer and throughout the school year.
- Reviews and monitors school improvement plans that support increased school improvement with clearly outlined outcomes.
- Supports the selection of school staff to fill principal vacancies promptly.
- Conducts conferences with families of students to resolve concerns for their cluster that escalate to the Central Office level.
- Manages annual Principal Director budget.
- Models equitable practices in all activities.
- Performs related duties as assigned .
- Master's degree or higher required.
- Administration and Supervision endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education (or eligibility to secure this license) at the time of hire required.
- Minimum of ten (10) combined years of experience in elementary educational leadership, including at least four years as a principal, head of school, or equivalent position.
- Knowledgeable of state and federal accreditation standards and requirements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate complex ideas simply and succinctly.
- Outstanding interpersonal and teamwork skills; ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to motivate and appropriately challenge staff.
- Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail and the ability to manage competing demands and determine priorities independently.
- Experience in working in a fast-paced environment and managing changing priorities.
- Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred.
