Certified Medical Assistant

Job DescriptionUnder the direct supervision of the physician(s) in the clinic, the Certified Medical Assistant assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient case management. The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the physician in clinical and administrative functions.ResponsibilitiesPerforms patient care services:Monitors patient flow to assure best use of physician timeMonitors patients to assure their comfort, privacy, and safetyObtains vitals, chief complaint, and current history for each patient and prepares them for exam; Communicates patient/family healthcare needs to the appropriate healthcare providerReports significant events and situations to healthcare providerAssists physician during any minor procedures as requestedAdministers appropriate medication as ordered by physician under their direct supervisionDocuments effectiveness of medication administeredCompletes appropriate laboratory tests, or prepares request forms for appropriate tests ordered by provider; Schedules as necessaryParticipates in patient/family teaching within knowledgeable areasPerforms clinical and administrative functions:Assures concise reporting and documentation of informationRequests/sends medical records or test results from/to appropriate departmentsGathers all laboratory test results and attaches to patient's chart per physician's requestCompletes scheduled and non-scheduled duties; Utilizes and accounts for all resourcesCleans and stocks examination and minor procedure rooms for each patient and procedure per OSHA standardsEnsures all patient care equipment is in proper working orderPrepares medical/procedural equipment for sterilizationQualificationsEducation:Required: High School or GED and a Vocational/Technical Diploma from a medical assistant program.Preferred: Associate degree or one-year postsecondary education in medical fieldLicense or Certification:Required:Valid and current medical assistant certification from an accredited program (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, CCMA)Experience:Required: No requirementPreferred: 1 year as a medical assistant working under physician supervision in a medical office or clinic setting.Knowledge:Knowledge of infection control and hygieneBasic understanding of computer operations and keyboarding, including electronic medical recordsSkills:Good oral and written communication skillsInterpersonal skillsClerical skillsAbilities:Ability to interpret physicians order and carry them out as requestedAbility to educate patientsAbility to organize work and effectively maintain patient flowMust be patient/customer service oriented, projecting professionalism and sensitivityWork Environment:Work is generally performed in a healthcare environment. Exposure to chemicals which may be used in patient care.Physical Demands:Ability to lift, push, pull and position patients or equipment. Frequent reaching, sitting walking, and standing may be required.
