Medical Assistant Urgent Care

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides patient care services in the back office medical setting, which will meet the specific needs of the patient.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs the essential functions as defined as by the appropriate Skills Competency Checklist.
  • Compliance with established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Implements infection control policies throughout the course of patient care and other job duties.
  • Complies with personal protective equipment policy necessary for protection from exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious disease and other hazardous substances. Observes and communicates changes in the patient's condition to the provider on duty.
  • Assists provider with exams, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care under direct supervision.
  • Participates in the completion of the emergency equipment daily checklist, as well as any assigned duties and tasks necessary to maintain compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Participates in education programs and attends meetings as required.
  • Dispenses prescriptions and medications per policy
  • Follows and complies with standing orders policy; recognizes when the provider on duty is necessary based on patient presentation and policy guidance
  • Administers medications per policy and adheres to all safety protocols and procedures for medication administration.
  • Notifies the provider on duty promptly of all unusual patient occurrences including medication events on an incident report.
  • Promptly notifies the Clinic Manager of patient or employee safety concerns.
  • Follows guidelines and requirements of laboratory and clinical accreditation policies.
  • Treats patients and co-workers consistent with the NextCare Mission Statement, Vision, Values and Performance Standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or described by Company policy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Analytical Testing: Perform moderate-complexity clinical testing across authorized disciplines (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis) in strict accordance with the laboratory's COLA-approved SOP manual.
  • Quality Control & Calibration: Execute and document daily instrument calibrations, quality control (QC) tracking, and corrective actions for out-of-range values prior to reporting patient results.
  • COLA Inspection Readiness: Maintain orderly, verifiable, and audit-ready logs for all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical activities to ensure seamless biennial COLA on-site surveys.
  • Competency & Training: Participate in mandatory, documented competency assessments (semiannually in the first year of employment, and annually thereafter) covering all six CLIA-mandated elements.
  • Proficiency Testing (PT): Successfully test and document blind proficiency testing samples exactly like patient specimens, adhering to strict anti-commingling regulations.
  • Specimen & EMR Processing: Accession, process, centrifuge, and evaluate sample integrity, reporting data accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Critical Value Notification: Promptly recognize critical, life-threatening results and follow immediate notification protocols to the attending Texas healthcare provider.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Candidates in Arizona

Education: Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent; and meets the criteria in sections 1, or 2 or 3 below.

  1. The medical assistant candidate has completed an APPROVED Medical Assistant Training Program*.
    • Certification is not required but is
"Approved medical assistant training program," means a program accredited by one of the following two- accreditation organizations:
  • The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health (CAAHEP); or
  • The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES); or
* Recruiter will verify that the candidate has completed an APPROVED Medical Assistant Training Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
  1. The medical assistant candidate has completed an UNAPPROVED medical assistant training program AND
    • Certification* is
Successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the following two agencies:
  • National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA); or
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
Certifying organizations accepted in Arizona by the NCCA are:

(CMA) Certified Medical Assistant
  • exam and certification is administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or
(RMA) Registered Medical Assistant
  • exam and certification are approved for medical assistants that meet the American Medical Technologists (AMT) criteria; or
(CCMA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
  • exam and certification are administered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA); or
(NCMA) National Certified Medical Assistant
  • certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT); or
(CMAC) Clinical Medical Assistant Certification
  • exam and certification administered by the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
* Recruiter will verify the medical assistant has documentation of certification by an organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, or American National Standards Institute.
  1. The medical assistant candidate is eligible for hire if they meet one of the following three (3) criteria within A., or B., or
The medical assistant candidate completed an UNAPPROVED medical assistant training program AND Was Employed as a medical assistant for one (1) year or more after program completion must have occurred prior to February 2, 2000,*; or

*Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation
  1. The medical assistant candidate was directly supervised by the SAME physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours (approximately working 40 hours/week for 12 months) prior to February 2, 2000,*; or
*Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation
  1. The medical assistant completed a United States Armed Forces medical services training program*.
*Candidates must complete the Arizona Medical Assistant Candidate Employment Attestation

*Recruiter will verify that the candidate has completed and satisfied the Human Resources attestation requirement to meet the criteria above.
  1. The following Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credentials are eligible for hire in a lesser role under the Clinical Care Specialist (CCS) job
  • AEMT*
  • EMT-I* (Intermediate)
  • EMT-P* (Paramedic)
  • Paramedic*

  1. LPNs are eligible for hire into the lesser role under Clinical Care Specialist (CCS) job description in the state of Arizona. The licensed LPN may only perform medical assistant duties when they are hired under the MA/CCS job description.*

The LPN may only perform medical assistant duties at NextCare to remain within the state standards, which stipulate that a physician assistant may NOT supervise the LPN.

In the following states LPNs may be hired under there LPN licensure credentials and verification of education and diploma from a state approved LPN school.

The Director of QA, Risk Management and Regulatory Affairs, the Director of Workforce Management, and the Regional Vice President (RVP) for the respective market to make a final eligibility determination and document the response on the Candidate Determination for Recruiter form will review candidates identified by the recruiter as requiring further clarification of the candidate's credentials.

*Nebraska State Requirements

Candidates in Nebraska must meet all requirements for other non-Arizona states and the following Medication Aide Registry requirement. Medical Assistants employed in Nebraska must obtain and maintain biennially a Medication Aide Registry*.

*Recruiter will verify that all Nebraska medical assistant/CCS candidates have the Medication Aide Registry in addition to the other necessary medical assistant /CCS requirements to be eligible for hire at NextCare.

Important: The Recruiter will notify the Director of Workforce Management when a Nebraska Medical Assistant is hired to ensure that Nebraska employer training and competency requirements are addressed for the new hire.
  • Medication training (injectable and non-injectable medications) and injection competency for Nebraska medical assistants are verified post- hire by RCL or their designee under the direction of the Director of Workforce Management*.
  • Clinic Managers will verify the medication aide's registry is renewed


Grandfathered Clinical Care Specialist Staff: Employees hired under the CCS job description prior to November 15, 2022, which do not meet one of the above criteria, are grandfathered into their current medical assistant job description. Grandfathered CCS employees must have their clinical competency verified in 2023 by a Regional Clinic Lead (RCL) or their appointed designee. The clinical competency is retained in ADP WFN.

CPR Certification (applies to all states employed):

Current healthcare professional level CPR certification issued by American Heart Association, American Red Cross, American Safety Health Institute or National Safety Council.

VALUED BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Experience: Prior recent experience in an emergency department, urgent care or other clinical setting.
