Respiratory Therapist
The Respiratory Therapist RRT provides advanced-level respiratory care to patients. Care is designed to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control deficiencies of the cardiopulmonary system within the physician's order. This position serves as a resource to the CRT staff. The RRT may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments designated by leadership based on the needs of the department. Responsibilities include performing, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol. The therapist obtains arterial gases and oversees the operation of equipment for optimal patient care. They initiate Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria and interventions based on assessment interpretations. Medications are administered in a timely and safe manner, while evaluations are conducted appropriately according to protocol. The RRT ensures that patient progress is communicated to staff, physicians, and other departments. Maintaining awareness of assigned patients' overall conditions is crucial. They recognize and address the educational needs of patients and families related to health promotion and wellness. Teaching patients and families self-care techniques and modalities is part of the role. The therapist completes documentation according to departmental standards and accurately documents productivity information. Monitoring supplies and equipment and notifying appropriate personnel when supplies are low, broken, or out on loan is required. Effective time utilization is necessary to achieve productivity standards, including using low census time efficiently. Participation in quality and patient safety initiatives is expected. Identifying potential areas for improvement, including processes that could be streamlined to enhance patient satisfaction, is essential. The RRT also identifies potential safety hazards and takes appropriate actions. The RRT participates in departmental meetings, contributing ideas and feedback. Promoting the profession of Respiratory Care and acting as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff is important. Engagement in quality improvement and research activities as part of the Respiratory Care Team helps guide the development of patient care standards. The RRT may be required to float to other departments based on business needs. Being placed on-call during scheduled shifts may also be required. Performing other duties as assigned is part of the position.
