Officer, Accounting – Finance Division Full-time position. Multiple locations considered. Application deadline: July 6th, 2026. Human Rights Watch ("HRW") seeks an Officer, Accounting to support the Finance Division by facilitating bank reconciliation processes. HRW has 27 entities and branches outside the U.S., and this position will support both the Global Accounting team and the local Operations Administrators. The Finance Division is led by the Chief Financial Officer and the Global Controller and is responsible for financial management, implementing financial strategy and maintaining fiscal integrity of HRW. In this role you will work with the Finance & Operations Directors, Assistant Directors and the Revenue Manager. This full-time position will be based in one of HRW’s U.S. offices, preferably New York or Washington, D.C., and will report to the Associate Director in New York. The successful candidate will need to work from the office as required. Responsibilities Prepare 80 monthly bank reconciliations and adjustments to individual bank accounts based on GAAP and IFRS guidelines for U.S. and international entities. Partner with Operations Administrators on outstanding reconciliation issues and help them when issues or discrepancies arise. Prepare and post journal entries related to bank activity. Work with Operations Administrators and provide training on bank pre‑reconciliations when needed. Ensure timely completion of reconciliations in line with close deadlines. Balance sheet and income statement GL account analysis including accumulated depreciation, depreciation expense, etc. Maintain and update the Global Fixed Assets register, record asset additions, disposals, transfers and reclassifications. Liaise with IT to track capital work in progress and ensure timely capitalization. Prepare all depreciation schedules for different entities for local audits, including the year‑end global fixed assets schedule. Calculate and post monthly depreciation. Act as the main contact with auditors concerning fixed assets questions. Manage the updating and archiving of all data and relevant systems such as Salesforce, SharePoint, OneDrive. Support quarter and year‑end close processes. Help create an AP tracker (expenses paid). Assist with accounts payable and serve as backup for the accounting officer. Partner with the Associate Director to advise on process and internal control improvement opportunities. Assist with other administrative duties and projects as needed. Perform other tasks as may be required. Qualifications Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent working experience in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field is required. Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting or non‑profit finance is required. Related Skills and Knowledge: Proven track record in general accounting, including journal entries, bank reconciliations, account analysis, and a general understanding of accounting principles. Experience with general ledger systems, policies, and internal controls related to accounting and finance. Experience working within an organization with a complex structure across multiple global locations. Proficiency in a computer‑based accounting system and Excel; prior experience with NetSuite is desirable. Analytical, problem‑solving and creative skills and ability to exercise sound judgment. Excellent time‑management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining attention to detail. Interpersonal skills with ability to communicate well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Prior work experience in nonprofit/NGO financial operations. Other: Candidates must possess valid U.S. work authorization and must not require future sponsorship.
