Research Assistant I
At UT MD Anderson, the Research Assistant I role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to innovative translational cancer research that supports discoveries impacting patients worldwide. This position provides exposure to advanced laboratory techniques, collaborative scientific projects, mentorship from experienced researchers, and opportunities for professional growth while supporting a meaningful mission dedicated to eliminating cancer.

Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations
• Carry out experiments in molecular biology and genetics. • Extract DNA from biological samples. • Extract RNA from biological samples. • Run gel electrophoresis experiments. • Prepare laboratory buffers and reagents. • Maintain tissue cultures. • Maintain 3D organoid cultures. • Maintain immune cell cultures. • Work with and help maintain a microfluidics device. • Perform immune cell-tumor co-culture assays. Histology & Specimen Preparation
• Prepare biological specimens from animal models. • Prepare biological specimens from patient clinical samples. • Dissect mice for research studies. • Fix tissues for histological evaluation. • Embed tissues for histological evaluation. • Perform immunostaining experiments. Record Keeping
• Maintain accurate records of experimental data. • Maintain detailed records of research protocols. • Analyze experimental data using computer applications. • Organize research data for reporting and documentation. • Plot and present research data. • Enter research data into databases as required. Communication
• Follow verbal instructions accurately. • Follow written instructions accurately. • Communicate research results to the supervisor. • Report potential experimental issues in a clear and understandable manner. • Participate in laboratory meetings. • Read scientific articles and reference materials. • Develop step-by-step written procedures for experiments. • Communicate experimental procedures to supervisors and laboratory team members. Safety & General Laboratory Support
• Maintain a clean workplace. • Maintain an orderly workplace. • Comply with institutional rules regarding biohazard safety. • Comply with OSHA regulations regarding biohazard safety. • Comply with institutional rules regarding radiation safety. • Handle hazardous chemicals including phenol, ethidium bromide, acrylamide, and formamide safely. • Demonstrate a willingness to work with radioisotopes. • Operate laboratory equipment and apparatus effectively. • Perform literature and online information searches. • Learn new laboratory techniques and assist with additional laboratory activities as assigned. Within the GI department, the Research Assistant I provides technical assistance for core laboratory research projects focused on translational cancer research. The Research Assistant I role offers hands-on involvement in molecular biology, genetics, tissue culture, histology, and animal model research. The Research Assistant I position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about science and eager to contribute to cutting-edge cancer research while developing their laboratory skills through mentorship and professional growth. The ideal candidate will possess foundational laboratory knowledge and experience related to molecular biology, tissue culture, scientific data management, and experimental procedures. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in cancer research, the ability to learn new laboratory techniques, and the motivation to work collaboratively in a research environment. Minimum $18.99/hour - Midpoint $23.80/hour - Maximum $28.61/hour Work Location: Houston, onsite The typical work schedule is Day shift.
