Head Counselor Job Description The Justice Education Center’s mission is to improve the lives of children, youth, and adults through increasing community safety, reducing crime and violence, and providing educational and wellness opportunities for Connecticut’s children, youth, and families. In keeping with The Center’s mission, Camp Inspire’s goal is to provide children with the opportunity to engage in fun and educational activities surrounded by the wonders of nature year‑round, while building self‑esteem, forming new friendships, developing empathy for others, developing positive relationships with staff members, and learning mediative leadership skills. Job Title: Head Counselor Classification: Exempt (Seasonal) Reports to: The Head counselor reports to the Camp Director or his/her designee and works with the group counselors. Salary: $900 - $1100 per week Position Purpose To serve as a member of the camp staff to further the mission of The Justice Education Center and Camp Inspire through daily interaction with all of the group counselors and their campers. The Head Counselor will supervise the counselors, ensure they are present, and provide feedback if programs aren’t working for any specific group. Essential Job Functions Keep track of counselors and their group schedules. Remind regularly to keep campers well hydrated. Make adjustments if any counselor is absent. Help counselors meet camper needs and camp goals: Meet with counselors to understand group goals for the week and daily home concerns that may affect the day at camp. Participate in all trainings of the camp and the group staff, including general staff meetings and in‑service trainings. Conduct daily health and safety inspections (possibly with camp nurse); ensure living/meeting spaces are clean and tidy, bathrooms are cleaned daily, assist with inventory and storage of equipment, submit orders for supplies to the Program Director. Participate in evening supervision, evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all‑camp activities; work with assigned counselors to actively participate in all camp activities. Responsibilities of All Camp Staff Follow all policies as outlined in the Staff Manual. Maintain positive working relationships with campers, parents, and other staff. Encourage physical, emotional growth and positive character development in all campers. Practice cultural humility and learn about all cultures. Help maintain the cleanliness of communal spaces. Care for program equipment, supplies, and spaces; report risks or facilities in disrepair to Maintenance or Management Team. Assist with other duties outside the normal scope to ensure programs run smoothly and safely. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications and Experience) Must submit to and be cleared by a background check. Must complete mandated reporter training and sexual harassment awareness training. Previous experience working with children. Must be at least 20 years of age. Current certification in ARC First Aid and CPR is expected; certification will be offered by the camp prior to the season start. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors; prior camping experience preferred. Physical Aspects of the Position Ability to communicate and work with groups of varying ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff. Ability to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply behavior management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards. Physical ability to respond to first aid situations, assist campers in emergencies, and maintain constant supervision of campers. Willingness to work in all weather conditions, including storms that may require program adjustments. #J-18808-Ljbffr
