Power Systems Engineer / Senior Power Systems Engineer

Continuum Associates LLC is a U.S.-based global consulting firm specializing in engineering, power and energy economics, technology, and strategy for the electric power and energy industry.

Continuum Associates is seeking a Power Systems Engineer / Senior Power Systems Engineer with a strong engineering background in power system analysis, modeling, and grid studies. This position will support advanced engineering projects involving electric transmission and distribution infrastructure, renewable energy integration, power system reliability, grid modernization, and generation development.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with power system simulation software, strong analytical and programming capabilities, and knowledge of North American power markets, reliability standards, and interconnection processes.

Depending on experience level, the position may also involve project management, mentoring junior engineers, and helping develop a growing North American engineering team working alongside Continuum's engineering teams in the U.S. and India.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform power system engineering studies and data analysis related to bulk transmission, distributed generation, and power quality.
• Conduct transmission and distribution planning studies.
• Support renewable energy grid integration studies involving solar, wind, battery storage, and other generation resources.
• Perform power system reliability assessments and related engineering analyses.
• Support engineering studies involving utility power systems and renewable generation facilities.
• Develop, maintain, and analyze power system models using industry-standard simulation software.
• Utilize tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC, PSS/E, Simulink for Power Systems, TARA, or similar platforms.
• Prepare clear, concise engineering reports documenting methodologies, study results, findings, and recommendations.
• Analyze engineering and power system data using Python, Excel, R, or other programming and data analysis tools.
• Support generator and large-load interconnection studies and related technical analyses.
• Apply knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards and applicable FERC Orders.
• Support projects involving North American ISO/RTO and utility transmission planning and interconnection procedures.
• Work with systems and markets including MISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, ISO-NE, NYISO, CAISO, AESO, IESO, and others.
• Manage or support multiple engineering projects and client engagements simultaneously.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, vendors, utilities, developers, and other stakeholders.
• Identify technical and project-related problems and recommend practical solutions.
• Participate in client meetings, ISO/RTO stakeholder meetings, industry conferences, and technical discussions as needed.
• Maintain project schedules, deliverables, and deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment.
• Take ownership of assigned engineering work and ensure high-quality, accurate deliverables.
• For senior-level candidates, mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff.
• Help develop and strengthen Continuum's North American engineering team while collaborating with engineering teams in the U.S. and India.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline with relevant power system study experience.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience for the Power Systems Engineer position.
• Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience for the Senior Power Systems Engineer position.
• Experience supporting North American energy market analysis and/or working within the U.S. or Canadian power sector.
• Strong background in electric power systems analysis and modeling.
• Hands-on expertise with at least one major power system simulation package such as PSCAD/EMTDC, PSS/E, Simulink for Power Systems, TARA, or equivalent.
• Experience with transmission planning, distribution planning, renewable grid integration, power system economics, reliability assessment, or related studies.
• Programming and/or data analysis experience using Python, R, Excel, or another major programming language or analytical tool.
• Knowledge of North American electric power transmission and generation systems.
• Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, assignments, and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong technical report writing and presentation skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to independently manage assigned responsibilities and take ownership of deliverables.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States or Canada. Candidates requiring current or future visa sponsorship may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electric Power Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited U.S. or Canadian university.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in a U.S. state, P.Eng. registration in a Canadian province, or the ability to obtain professional licensure.
• Experience with renewable energy generation, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems.
• Experience performing advanced transmission and distribution system studies.
• Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards.
• Knowledge of FERC Orders governing generator and large-load interconnection.
• Familiarity with ISO/RTO and utility interconnection and transmission planning procedures.
• Experience working with MISO, PJM, ERCOT, SPP, ISO-NE, NYISO, CAISO, AESO, IESO, or other North American system operators.
• Project management experience within power systems engineering or energy consulting.
• Experience working directly with utilities, developers, ISOs/RTOs, government agencies, or other electric power industry clients.
• Experience mentoring, training, or leading junior engineering professionals.
• Ability to help develop and lead multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Work Environment / Schedule

• Full-time position.
• Candidates may be located within the United States or Canada.
• Continuum Associates is headquartered in Columbia, Maryland.
• Hybrid and remote work arrangements may be considered for well-qualified candidates.
• Position requires collaboration with engineering teams, clients, utilities, vendors, and other stakeholders across multiple locations.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and strict deadlines within a fast-paced consulting environment is required.
• Business travel is expected to be less than 20% of the time.
• Travel may include client sites, ISO/RTO stakeholder meetings, industry conferences, and Continuum offices.
• Some international travel may be required.
• Candidates must have a valid driver's license and passport and be able to travel across the U.S.-Canada border as required.
