Work Shift Day (United States of America) Job Summary The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Certified Medical Assistant functions under the direction of the Physician/APP, Nurse Supervisor/Clinical Lead, and/or Practice/Office Manager. This role recognizes patient needs and symptoms in advance, provides care under the physician’s direction, prepares patients for exams, assists during treatments, coordinates tests and follow-up care, documents in the medical record, and explains patient instructions to patients and families. The candidate demonstrates competency and skills while serving populations ranging from neonate to geriatric. Clinical and Non-Clinical Duties and Expectations Rotates among various clinical and non-clinical service areas, such as x-ray (where performed), and front office. Registers patients upon entrance to facility. Assists with completion of FMLA forms. Coordinates/communicates information with Workers Compensation Adjuster. Orders clinical supplies and stocks exam rooms. Prepares exam rooms to aid physicians with treatment of patients. Performs vital signs and gathers information to prepare patients for provider examination. Assists physician/APP with bracing, splinting, casting, injections, suture, and staple removal. Performs basic wound care under the direction of the physician/APP. Performs medical scribe duties, assisting physician/APP with documentation of progress notes and order entry. Assists with the preparation of pharmaceutical refills for physician/APP approval. Precertifies surgery, schedules surgery, post- operative therapy, and home health care. Assists with DME orders and instruction for patients. Maintains required clinical logs: cast saw, eye wash stations, emergency boxes, oxygen tanks. Assists with medical assistant student clinical rotations and mentorship, and cross-training of other team members. Assists with patient calls and inquiries, and escalates triage calls to the RN, APP, or physician. Anticipates and maintains the safety needs of the patient. Ensures accurate and timely documentation in the EMR. Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Duties and Expectations (In areas performed) Performs radiographic and other diagnostic imaging procedures to assist clinical team and physicians. Prepares and positions patients for imaging procedures ensuring proper techniques including radiation protection. Obtains optimum views as ordered by the physician. Processes images and reviews for proper identification and quality control. Cross‑trains other team members. Completes and maintains logs, reports, and documentation. Processes, logs, and prepares labs for shipment to laboratory. Patient Liaison Provides relationship-based patient-centered care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, disease). Partners with patients and significant others or families using appropriate methods for setting and purpose (e.g., huddles; interdisciplinary rounds; just-in-time explanations of physician instructions). Keeping the patient at ease in the physician’s office and making the patient’s goals the focus of the plan of care. Practices using current clinical practice standards. Teamwork and Collaboration Coordinates the delivery and documentation of safe, quality patient care that promotes the professional care delivery model. Utilizes diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication methods (huddles, interdisciplinary rounds). Ensures timely documentation and promotes a respectful, inclusive clinical environment. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner and promoting the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members. Professional Development and Initiative Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, required mandatory education, and population-specific education. May serve as a preceptor for onboarding Medical Assistants/students and serves as an exemplary role model for all staff and students across disciplines. Evidence Based Practice and Research Promotes evidence-based practice in regards to safe, quality patient care. Upholds all health care system/organizational policies, procedures, and clinical competencies, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. May serve as practice Safety Coach. Participates in data collection, poses relevant clinical questions to advanced evidence-based practice, and consults appropriate experts to address practice questions. Resources and Support Proactively plans for the care of patients across the care continuum while providing direct patient care. Participates in the development of protocols and procedures when called upon or via self-initiation, collaborating with care managers and other team members to achieve best practice outcomes. Supports efficient and effective use of human and material resources. Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct. Required Minimum Education High School Diploma General or GED General or Other / Certificate Medical Assisting Required Minimum License(s) And Certification(s) All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor CMA - Certified Medical Assistant or MEDCA - Certified Clinical & Administrative Medical Assistant or NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant or RMA - Registered Medical Assistant or CCMA - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Additional License(s) And Certification(s) Must have successfully passed a Medical Assistant credentialing body examination (AAMA, AMT, NHA, or NCCT) with current and maintained Medical Assistant credential. Upon hire required. Required Minimum Experience Work experience in a physician practice setting preferred. Specific experience in practice specialty preferred. Radiology experience preferred, and/or will provide training within first sixty days in applicable areas only. Required Minimum Skills Must be organized and attentive to detail. Must be able to work quickly and efficiently to assure patient comfort and satisfaction. Must be able to communicate and understand verbal and written English language, optimize use of technology to support clinical care, and hold basic computer skills.
