They are responsible for patient transfers to and from the OR, situating patients on the operating table, prepping them for surgery, and assisting the physician during surgery. They are trained in aseptic technique and are tasked with cleaning and sterilizing the OR and surgical instruments. Some operating room technicians may manage the surgical supply inventory and place orders to ensure surgeons have the necessary tools and materials. CSTs can specialize in particular case types and select their clinical setting, as they are readily employable in acute care hospitals and outpatient surgery centers.
