Circulating Registered Nurse – Operating Room

Location: Phoenix, Arizona

Position Summary

True Precision Medical is seeking a skilled and attentive Circulating Registered Nurse to support safe, efficient surgical care in our outpatient procedural environment. The Circulating RN coordinates nursing care within the operating room, advocates for the patient, maintains a safe and sterile environment, and ensures that all required documentation and safety procedures are completed.

The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, clinically confident, and able to anticipate the needs of the surgical team while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety and comfort.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPre -Procedure Responsibilities

• Review the patient’s medical history, allergies, medications, laboratory results, clearances, consent forms, and provider orders.
• Confirm patient identity, scheduled procedure, procedure site, and completion of all pre-operative requirements.
• Participate in the pre-procedure handoff and communicate relevant clinical information to the surgical team.
• Assess the operating room before each procedure to confirm that equipment, instruments, implants, medications, and supplies are available and functioning properly.
• Ensure that required positioning devices, safety equipment, and emergency supplies are readily accessible.
• Assist with preparing the operating room according to the scheduled procedure and provider preferences.
• Welcome the patient to the operating room, explain what to expect, and provide reassurance.
• Help transfer, position, and secure the patient safely while protecting pressure points, skin integrity, dignity, and privacy.
• Apply required monitoring and safety devices in collaboration with anesthesia personnel.
• Assist with skin preparation and ensure proper documentation of the surgical site and preparation.

Intraoperative Responsibilities

• Serve as the patient’s advocate throughout the procedure.
• Coordinate activities within the operating room and maintain effective communication among the surgical team.
• Initiate and participate in surgical safety checks, including verification, time-out, count procedures, and debriefing.
• Monitor and maintain aseptic technique, addressing any breaks in sterility immediately.
• Open sterile supplies and deliver additional instruments, medications, specimens, and equipment to the sterile field as needed.
• Assist the surgical team by anticipating procedural needs and responding promptly to requests.
• Document the procedure accurately, including patient positioning, skin preparation, medications, implants, supplies, specimens, counts, personnel, and significant events.
• Label and handle medications and solutions according to facility policy.
• Manage and document surgical specimens accurately, including proper labeling and transfer.
• Coordinate required imaging, laboratory testing, pathology services, or vendor support.
• Monitor the operating-room environment and promote compliance with infection-prevention and safety standards.
• Assist with equipment troubleshooting and obtain additional resources when necessary.
• Maintain awareness of the patient’s condition and communicate concerns promptly to the provider and anesthesia team.
• Participate in sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy and take immediate action to resolve discrepancies.
• Respond appropriately during emergencies and assist with Basic or Advanced Cardiac Life Support measures when required.

Post-Procedure Responsibilities

• Assist with dressings, patient transfer, and safe transportation to the recovery area.
• Provide a complete handoff report to the PACU or recovery nurse.
• Ensure that specimens, implants, medications, counts, and required documentation are complete before leaving the operating room.
• Assist with room turnover and preparation for the next procedure.
• Report equipment problems, supply shortages, medication concerns, or patient-safety events promptly.
• Participate in post-procedure debriefing and communicate opportunities for improvement.

Safety, Quality, and Compliance

• Follow all infection-control, medication-safety, patient-identification, and emergency-response procedures.
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, state and federal regulations, accreditation requirements, and facility policies.
• Support proper handling and disposal of sharps, biohazardous materials, medications, and surgical waste.
• Participate in quality-improvement activities, safety audits, staff meetings, competency assessments, and required training.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and procedure-ready operating-room environment.
• Perform additional duties within the RN scope of practice as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the State of Arizona or a valid multistate compact license.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Current Basic Life Support certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification.
• At least one year of recent operating-room or perioperative nursing experience.
• Knowledge of sterile technique, surgical safety, infection prevention, patient positioning, and specimen handling.
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
• Strong critical-thinking, communication, organization, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with surgeons, anesthesia personnel, nurses, surgical technologists, and support staff.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records and intraoperative documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Two or more years of circulating experience in an ambulatory surgery center or outpatient procedural setting.
• Certified Perioperative Nurse credential.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification, if applicable to the patient population.
• Experience with the procedures and specialties performed by the facility.
• Experience with moderate sedation, monitored anesthesia care, or general-anesthesia cases.

Schedule

• Monday-Friday: 7:00AM-3:30PM
• Schedule may vary according to procedure volume and patient-care needs.
• Occasional early-morning, extended, or additional hours may be required.
