The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system! Pay rate of $20.39 per hour. Employees may be promoted to a Hwy Construction Technician II position at a rate of $23.454 per hour upon acquiring the necessary certifications and demonstration of skills. Exciting Added Pay Differentials! In this classification, those who hold a CDL and are utilized to perform CDL functions on a regular basis shall receive a pay differential of: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service,
an additional $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service,

Job Duties: Construction Technicians are responsible for field inspection of heavy highway construction projects. Construction Technicians perform materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials, as required. They verify the contractors' work is completed in accordance with the project plans and specifications. Construction Technicians routinely read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications, and they also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor, as well as a diary of the construction activities as they occur throughout the day. All official records are maintained digitally, and technicians will be expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. Construction Technicians perform various survey tasks, utilizing rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment. Individuals will be expected to be able to work both as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision. This position assists with snow removal on highways and may be required to operate snowplows during winter weather events. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements / Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
Highway Construction Technician I: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Highway Construction Technician II: Experience in performing activities pertinent to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspections practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry. Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment. Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, SiteManager, GEOPAK, and MicroStation software. Other: Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Hwy Construction Technician II classification, applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate's degree in civil engineering technology, or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses. Upon hire, you will be provided with the required training material. This is a self-paced training and once completed provides for promotion to the Highway Construction Tech II level. Typically, this is accomplished within the first 6 months of employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: standards and specifications used for various types of projects; instruments, equipment, and material used in surveying, testing, and inspection work; all phases of construction and plant inspection and their relationship to each other; surveying and testing techniques. Skill in: calculating mathematical computations involving trigonometry and geometry; applying complex construction inspection, surveying, and materials testing techniques; using personal computers/laptops and associated applications and software, including drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software; using technical engineering equipment and instruments during assigned projects. Ability to: interact with coworkers, contractors, consultants, and the public to maintain cooperative work relationships; prepare technical reports and maintain detailed records; maintain surveying, testing, and inspection instruments and equipment; lift equipment and samples weighing up to 100 pounds; communicate with others in-person, and by telephone, radio, and email; interpret and apply engineering plans and specifications; plan, schedule, and lead the work of coworkers during assigned projects; apply construction procedures in agency construction manuals and directives. Must be able to climb, bend, stoop, walk long distances and work long hours, possibly weekends, in outdoor temperature extremes.
