Speech-Language Pathologist

Supervised by/Reports to: Special Education Supervisor and Assistant Superintendent

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goal:

To provide appropriate services to communicatively disabled students (those with language, speech or hearing disorders) in the school system.

To provide consultative and collaborative services to teachers, parents, administrators and staff to support academic achievement and school success for all students.

Qualifications:

1. A degree from an accredited college or university in an appropriate field.

2. Possess and maintain or be eligible to apply for a Level 1 or Level 2 Speech and Language Pathologist- Assistant Certificate

3. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

5. Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students and develop methodologies and strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs.

6. Physical strength, emotional ability, and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, highly intensive work environment.

7. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

8. Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.

9. Ability to collaborate and communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school system staff to ensure the effective implementation of IEPs for designated students.

10. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.

2. Organizes and conducts language and speech screenings in the schools.

3. Organizes and conducts hearing screenings in the schools.

4. Evaluates and diagnoses children with speech and language disorders through use of standardized tests.

5. Selects children with clinical communicative disorders for enrollment in therapy.

6. Consults with principals and teachers regarding the arrangement of appropriate time schedules for children to be enrolled in therapy.

7. Coordinates the Language, Speech and Hearing Services Program with other school programs.

8. Prescribes and implements therapy for those children with communicative disorders.

9. Provides individual and/or group therapy for children with language, speech, or hearing disorders.

10. Refers students to other school personnel for special services.

11. Participates as needed in IEP development, implementation, and meetings.

12. Refers students, when necessary, to various community agencies and physicians.

13. Provides information to teachers about pupil progress in therapy.

14. Provides consultative services to regular or special classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and parents in order to give them information on communicative skills development, special materials, and procedures to be used in helping children develop appropriate communicative behaviors.

15. Suggests materials for planning programs in speech improvement in the classroom.

16. Maintains appropriate records regarding children's progress in therapy.

17. Maintains records and medical information regarding children with hearing impairments in order to convey the needs of the child to the classroom teacher.

18. Conducts parent conferences.

19. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.

20. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.

21. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.

22. Works cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system's vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame.

23. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.

24. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.

25. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.

26. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

27. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.

28. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.

29. Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representative groups as required.

30. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

31. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.

32. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Salary:

Salary schedules are found on the main Escambia County Schools website. Listed below are items that may be necessary to complete your employment process in order to compute your annual salary. It is your responsibility to provide us with this requested information in order to receive your accurate salary.

We need verification of previous public school teaching experience. Use the following information when requesting verification of experience from your past employment at other boards of education:

Within the state of Alabama, experience must be verified on Supplement EXP

Outside the state of Alabama, we must have a letter (on school district letterhead) or public school district form showing beginning and ending dates stating your years of service and position held while employed

Credit is awarded for public school experience only, private, parochial, or similar experience will not be accepted

Experience must be full time at least 50%-100% of the academic year

Administrative credit will be awarded only for experience in the same position, i.e., principal for principal position as stated in the salary schedule

Transfer Sick Leave: If you have sick leave from another state school system or from another state of Alabama agency, you must have a Sick Leave Transfer form sent from your previous employer to our Human Resources department

The Escambia County Schools awards a salary based on the highest degree earned, even if the degree is outside education. The degree must be verified on an official transcript & recognized by the Alabama State Department of Education.
